Does it work on cases

It works flawlessly on my AirPod pro 2 case. As for aftermarket cases, I would think it would depend on how different from the case they are.

No sure what you mean by “top” of the case. I installed it on my AirPod pro case and it works perfectly. See photos in listing. Mine installed just like that.
