Nikon D80 Digital Field Guide
K**O
One of the Best Nikon D80 Guides
The Nikon D80 was designed for people like me: Jumping from an advanced digital point & shoot to this excellent SLR- both using Secure Digital cards. I'm not a pro, but I have a moderate knowledge of digital cameras. The Nikon D80 Digital Field Guide fits the type of consumer that Nikon targeted for the D80.This book is an attractive supplement to Nikon's D80 instruction booklet. Nikon's booklet is factual but the organization is fragmented. With Nikon's booklet, new D80 users will spend more time flipping pages than taking pictures. With the D80 Digital Field Guide, facts are presented in an organized, clear, concise, and easy to understand manner. A pro that have been using digital SLR's for years wouldn't need a book in this genre, but I did and have found this book extremely useful!I did receive a very early edition of this book. It is true that there are missing hyphens & a wrong USB port photo. Books like this are rushed for publication because Nikon will eventually make a replacement for the D80 that will make this book obsolete. That's the nature of technology today. Looking past the first printing errors, I find that the good far outweighs the bad- therefore the 5 star rating. The few mistakes are very obvious and repetitive. They do not deter the user from learning the D80 and photography. I suspect that printing errors will be corrected in later editions. This color guide is attractive and formatted like a Frommer's travel guide. The price (an amazing $13.59 at Amazon) also makes it a bargain in comparison to other books in this category. I highly recommend this book.

Useful supplement to D80 owners guide
Tells you how to setup your D80 better than the Nikon guide. Also gives good tips to improve your photographic techniques.Bought the Kindle version and noticed hyphens missing between lens specifications, for example, 1855 instead of 18-55. Not a big deal once you know about the hyphen formatting issue in it. If you have bought or acquired a D80 without the Nikon guide then this book will be a replacement for it to help you set it up well. Also have a printed copy of the Magic Lantern D80 guide that is much more detailed than this guide, but I prefer this guide to it. Handier to keep an iPad mini in my gear bag than printed guides.

An excellent resource
I am very pleased that I bought this book shortly after I purchased the camera. It is far better and certainly better organized than the manual that came with the camera. The quick start guide at the beginning of the guide does an excellent job of explaining each feature in brief while the remainder of the text goes into the necessary detail of how you can use them. I would rate my background/skill level at photography to somewhere between novice and moderate (years in the video business) and I found the guide neither too technical or too simple. In short - a worthy investment for the new D80 owner!

The book is terrific. I have had my D80 for several years
The book is terrific. I have had my D80 for several years, but I learned a lot from the book. However, there is a problem; the book I ordered from Amazon was not in full color as described, but in black and white, and the illustrations were washed out and difficult to see. It was obviously a serious mistake in printing. I contacted Amazon, and they immediately refunded my money and told me to keep the book. I ordered another copy of the book, from another source because I wanted to examine the book before paying for it. It arrived as described, in full color. So, get the book but be aware that there are defective copies out there.

Nikon D 80 Digital Field Guide
This is a Ok book guide (generally) but it needs to address basic picture taking; like how do set your camera to take : low light pics/ indoors and outdoors pics and so on. Some step by step how to instructions on how to take different types of pics. This is a field Guide that should have on the spot answers to how you set up or use the camera when taking any picture and give you a better idea on what to look for, a general feel of what will makes the picture better. You should be able to buy it... so that you can get better at using the Nikon D80 in a shorter amount of time. This book also needs a reference section that answer questions like; Why don't my zoom lens stay focus, it's keeps going in and out of focus? You are in the wrong focus mode:AF-C that is for action pics, use AF-S for single pics it puts your focus point in the center. Af-C has a group of focus points and that can cost a focus problem when taking single shots . With AF-C anything that comes into the frame will draw the focus, costing your focus to go in and out.

great all around guide
This is much more than a guide to your D80. This is an introduction to the whole world of Digital SLR techniques. I found that I flipped through most of it when I first got the book and now a year later, I'm still picking it up to look through new techniques and camera features. The D80 is showing it's age these days, but I still take wonderful photos with it and this guide has helped me navigate all of its options and features. Due to the price of a new DSLR I'm probably going to have to wait a year or two, but I'm not too worried because the D80 is still kicking butt compared to all those silly iPhones and compact cameras.

Love this Book
This book is compact, but it packs a lot of easy to understand instructions on full color pages. It is simple enough for someone new to DSLR to understand. There is a quick tour section that introduces all parts and menus of the camera in a way to get you shooting quickly. The other chapters in the book go into more detail and teach manual operations and how to manipulate settings for specific situations. It is small enough to carry along and easy to refer to in any situation.I will be buying another one, because mine got wet and many of the pages are stuck together.

A book that lives up to its covers claims
This is a great book; in colour and printed to a good standard. The content is perfectly pitched. It explains in detail all the myriad of functions that the D80 offers and more importantly why and when you should use them. The second half of the book is a more generic set of photographic tips for a number of photographic scenarios (e.g. events, sport, wildlife, fireworks etc) that could apply to using any camera, but mention some D80 features that might be of particular benefit in each situation. The book is definitely aimed at the user and is not a deeply technical discussion on optoelectronics. It is clearly the intention of the authors that this book should be a true field guide as it will easily fit in most larger camera bags as a quick reference. However I personally am content to read this well written book at home and absorb its wise words at my leisure, rather than rifle through it when trying to take a difficult shot on location. In short this book really delivers.
