Ordered this for fast external storage, and it’s been excellent. Speed is the headline. When connected over Thunderbolt, transfers are noticeably faster than standard USB drives—large files move quickly, and it keeps up without slowing down mid-transfer. For things like video files or large projects, that makes a real difference. Build quality is another strong point. The drive feels solid and durable, not something you have to baby. It’s compact too, so it’s easy to keep in a bag without taking up much space. After using it across a few different systems, it’s been reliable—no disconnects or weird behavior, just consistent performance. One thing to keep in mind: to get the top speeds, you’ll need a Thunderbolt-compatible setup. It still works over USB-C, just not at the same peak performance. I recently purchased the SanDisk Professional 4TB PRO-G40 SSD, enticed by its impressive specifications and rugged design. Initially, the drive delivered exceptional performance, boasting read speeds up to 3000MB/s and write speeds up to 2500MB/s when connected via Thunderbolt 3 . The aluminum core and IP68 rating for dust and water resistance gave me confidence in its durability, making it suitable for on-the-go professionals. However, after a few weeks of use, I encountered several reliability issues. The drive began to intermittently disconnect, requiring multiple reconnections before it would appear in Finder on my MacBook Pro. Additionally, I experienced problems with Spotlight indexing and occasional system freezes upon ejecting the drive . Despite these challenges, the drive's speed and ruggedness remain appealing. If you're considering this SSD, be aware of potential compatibility and reliability issues, especially with macOS systems. It's advisable to ensure your system's USB-C ports provide sufficient power and to use high-quality cables to minimize connection problems.

I bought this to use as a backup for my computer, as well as for music production. The thing is great when it works - it’s hella fast, and so freaking tiny. Unfortunately, the device is constantly, spontaneously “improperly ejected” from my computer. I get constant notifications/warnings. I’m using the provided cable. It should just work. It’s less than a month old. I reached out to customer support a week ago and haven’t heard anything yet - not even a “thanks for reaching out” email. It might be worth it to check out their competition. This thing is too expensive for this kind of performance and (lack of) customer service, and you’re probably buying this because you need something reliable that actually does the thing it says it should do. Update: It’s been two months and I still am having constant issues with the drive spontaneously disconnecting. I still have not heard back from customer service after reaching out to the emails provided on their website. I also just wanted to say that I’ve had the overheating issues others have mentioned when it does work. Sometimes it seems to decide to just stop working because it gets so hot (which is yet another way I lose work thanks to this thing). I’m so upset that I spent so much money on this and have lost hours/days of work because of the problems this thing has. I’m in the process of trying to jerry-rig a solution - I just spent ~$50 on different kinds of tapes and cables to try to see if that will solve the problems. I cannot caution against this thing enough. Save yourself the headaches and heartaches of losing valuable data and go with the Samsung version. It may cost more up front, but you’ll be saving yourself in more ways than you know. Update 4 months later: Still no word from “customer support”. None of the cables (or tape) I purchased to try instead of the included one solves the issue, which is how I know without a shadow of doubt it’s an issue with this joke of a product and not my computer. This has been the worst purchase I’ve made in probably a decade. I’m going to end up buying the Samsung one, so I’m just out $400 because I made the mistake of not purchasing this with a credit card that might have offered more purchase protection. I still cannot caution against this thing enough. Do not make my mistake. Spend your hard-earned money on something that’s actually worth what you’re spending. Update 1.5years later: Just wanted to come back and state again how much I hate this hard drive after looking at other hard drives again and getting super sad and annoyed that I ever bought this one to begin with. It remains probably the worst purchase I've made for as long as I can remember. Please do not make the same mistake me and others made. It's not a cheap one to make. I literally will never purchase another sandisk product again because of this experience.

Ordered an enclosure to make my own, returned it, bought a more expensive enclosure that heated up hot even with the built in fan and made a high pitch noise. After two days it started smoking luckily I saved my m2 drive and MacBook is fine but still waiting on that refund. I was done with not knowing what I was buying this is pricy but I am very happy speeds on M2 MP are around 2800 r/wr, has a warranty, is quiet and it’s been pretty cool. I wish it was cheaper but I am able to run my FCP library, files, and effects with ease. Formatted 1TB in exfat to swap back and forth from the pc to the MacBook, speeds on windows 11 in exfat are around 1000MBs if you were to format in ntsf it would be a lot faster but I did not try being I am using it specifically on the MacBook. Last I just feel safe using this and knowing the manufactures, it handles all that I want and then some. Sometimes it is cheaper to just buy the quality item to begin with.

Finally a portable SSD with Thunderbolt speeds! It really is three times faster than the USB 3.2 Gen 2 drive from SanDisk I bought just last year (and, for Mac, also three times faster than USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 drives since the Thunderbolt ports on Mac won't use the second lane at all). At times, plugging it directly into a Thunderbolt 4 port on an M2 Mac mini with the provided cable, it connected using USB 3.1 rather than Thunderbolt. I verified this by looking at the USB and Thunderbolt buses using System Report; also BlackMagic disk speed tests were much slower when this happened (700-800MB/s rather than 2400ish). I'm not sure if that flakiness is caused by the drive, the Mac mini, or the cable—but I'd guess it's the cable. Other times, it connected to the Thunderbolt bus as expected. Mostly I will have this connected to a Thunderbolt 4 hub that nets me two more Thunderbolt 4 ports. I've found that this setup, with otherwise base M2 but upgraded to 24GB RAM, plus the external TB4 ports and storage, is very cost effective for my needs. Note that there is no decrease in speeds having it connected to the hub vs. directly to the Mac. Update 1: Because this SSD (the 4TB version) is **both 50% faster and 15 times larger** than the internal SSD on my 256GB M2 Mac Mini, I have turned it into a bootable drive and am running macOS from it. No complaints! Upgrading the Mac Mini at time of purchase to 2TB (half the space!) internally would have cost a whopping $800 extra with Apple's pricing, and I'd have less space. Not to mention it's impossible to upgrade the internal storage after the fact. Setting up as a bootable drive was simple and painless for me. More benefits of the big, fast bootable drive include plenty of space for memory swapping at higher speeds than the internal SSD if I run out of RAM, plus being able to keep large cloud storage drives fully available offline (Apple's FileProvider forces many of them to live in a particular location on the same volume macOS is installed on, which was too small for them until I moved to this drive). Update 2: If you're looking for a Thunderbolt drive that's a lot faster than this, don't bother looking. Theoretical max data transfer speeds over Thunderbolt 3/4 are limited to something like 22 Gbps (maybe 24 Gbps for Thunderbolt 4?) which translates to 2750MB/sec for Thunderbolt 3. The rest of the 40 Gbps bandwidth of Thunderbolt is reserved for other things. With this drive, I've gotten around 2480MB/sec read and 2400MB/sec write in BlackMagic disk speed benchmarks, which is close enough to top speed that I've stopped looking at, say, external Thunderbolt SSD enclosures + NVMe SSD sticks to try to get faster speeds than this.

I needed some fast storage for a 2020 M1 MacMini, and this seemed to be about the best I could find for the price. The MacMinis can't have their internal drives upgraded, so when I started running low, about the only option was to add an external drive. When I bought, the 1TB unit seemed like the best price point, with the 2TB being 2.5 times the price for double the storage and the 4TB unit being 5 times the price for four times the storage. The drive itself is compact and silent. It comes with a relatively short (nine-inch) cable that gets the job done but doesn't seem to be anything special. In operation, the drive doesn't seem to get as hot as some others I've seen, although it does get somewhat warm to the touch when plugged in for a while. I have mine connected via Thunderbolt 4 to my MacMini and it works without issue. SanDisk provides very minimal instructions, but thankfully it really is as simple as plugging the cable in and letting Mac OS do its thing. According to the Black Magic Speed Test, I'm getting 2785 MB/sec read performance and 2580 MB/sec write performance - this is quite fast for an external drive. For comparison, the built-in NVMe drive in my MacMini benchmarks at about 3000 MB/sec read performance. A higher-end OWC external RAID 0 device running 8 2TB high-end NVME drives actually returns about 20% lower benchmark scores than this SanDisk, despite it costing much more per TB than this external drive. Overall, I'm impressed with this drive enough to use it for some critical files and I've had no issues with it so far. There've been no compatibility issues and it seems to run just as fast as the internal disk no matter how I use it. If you're looking for a good quality and speedy external drive, then I have no trouble recommending this little SanDisk - definitely seems to be a gem, especially when you consider the price.

As a few of us that have ordered this SanDisk Professional 2TB PRO-G40 SSD have experienced, upon first use, my Laptop running Win 11 wouldn't recognize the drive. So, I tried it on a different laptop Running Win 10. Both are higher end laptops less than 3 mos old. I'm headed out of town for a photography/videography gig in the Philippines. I really needed this for storing additional footage and content. With my finger set to hit the return for a refund button, I thought about reaching out to San Disk Western Digital first to see what their tech support had to say. I'm very pleased that I did. 20 minutes of chat with a "Chris J" from San Disk, the issue was diagnosed and repaired. As it turns out, the SanDisk Professional 2TB PRO-G40 SSD was partitioned in a way that Win 10/11 couldn't read it. Chris J walked me through the steps to clean and reformat the SSD Drive. 20 minutes later, It works. YAY!!!! Now I don't have to send it back, wait for a refund, and search out a different high speed ssd drive. I tested it's write speeds in both receiving and sending data. Left content on the drive while using Davinci Resolve 18, not one slow down or hiccup. Again, I'm pleased that I didn't have to sent it back. Why 4 out of 5 stars? Simply the fact that I had to jump through a few small hoops. San Disk and Western Digital have been been a part of my Kit for 20 years, This is the first issue I've had with them. From the notice on the Amazon page, "Frequently returned item", I knew I was taking a gamble. 277 reviews, 4.3 stars average and an 11% 1 star, it was a gamble indeed. But I'm happy that I gave it a chance. Mixed with the additional Amazon extended warranty, this was a great purchase. Good Luck!

**** BEWARE *** If I could give this item negative stars I would. I watched a review on solid state drives and this is a $400 piece of junk. From the moment I plugged it in there were problems with this drive. It would freeze up and I couldn't unmount the drive and then it would freeze up my Finder. So then I have to do a hard restart and then I get scolded that I didn't eject it properly. This happens every time I walk away from the computer for more than 10 minutes. All my other external hard drives have no issues going to sleep, but not this one. Then it got so hot I felt like it was going to cause a fire. Even when the drive is not in use, it is burning hot. And now once it gets hot it un-mounts the icon from my desktop and freezes my Finder again. There is something seriously wrong with this drive. So I try contacting SanDisk. They are willing to replace the drive, but I have to send the old one back first. And since I don't have a printer they'll charge me an additional $1 to mail me a label. Why am I paying for something that's not my fault?? And where do I transfer my data to while I'm waiting for the new drive to arrive?? It was already several days late arriving the first time. So I tell them that I don't trust their product anymore and I just want to return it. I'll take my business elsewhere. And the response I got was "once you return the item, we will send you out a new one." Seriously?? What part of RETURN for a REFUND didn't you understand? So I try and do a return on Amazon. But my only choice is to print out a label and return it through the USPS. Except I don't have a printer anymore. So next I contact Amazon customer service by phone and have to deal with that stupid robot which is a colossal waste of time going around in circles who just wants to text me stuff. I don't own a cell phone, and apparently it took an act of God to finally get to a real person. Except I can't hardly understand a word she says in her high squeaky voice. English is obviously not her first language. Then I get conflicting instructions. Kohl's is overrun with returns, so I can take it to Staples. Nope. Scratch that. You have to take it to an Amazon center or a UPS Store. Nope. Scratch that too. So all I'm left with is printing out a label from Amazon, but since I don't have a printer anymore, I can't. I'm so tired of replacing all this stuff because it doesn't work. Why is the answer always to throw more of my money at it? I'm out of money. I am sooooo over spending a fortune on this crap that doesn't work that they expect you to keep replacing. For a $400 drive, I expected a whole lot more. Ultimately I found a friend who said they could print the label for me once they purchase more ink. SanDisk lost my business. I won't be back. I hope it was worth it. And I won't be purchasing anything electronic off of Amazon anymore either. Buyer beware!!

J'ai été vraiment impressionné de la grosseur. Ça tient dans une poche. Je suis encore en train de vérifier si ça va fonctionner avec mon ancien ordinateur de 2014. Je l'ai branché sur le port usb c de mon powered hub. Vu que ça prend beaucoup plus de puissance que le port usb a. J'attends un adapteur usb a à usb c. 9 Mars 2025, ça fonctionne et c'est extrêmement rapide. J'utilise beaucoup de bibliothèques de sons. Alors c'est très pesant. Mon ancien disque dur n'était plus capable. Ça a été une histoire. Mais c'est fait. L'ordinateur est encore très bon. Je n'étais pas intéressé à le changer. La seule chose que je regrette c'est de ne pas avoir eu la possibilité d'acheter un de 8 terabytes. Le maximum était de 4 To. Aujourd'hui je l'utilise avec mon Microsoft Surface. C'est génial. Il a déjà un ssd. Mais c'est pas assez pour tout ce que j'ai besoin.

Interner SSD Festplattenspeicher bei Apple kostet das drei- bis vierfache, daher sind bei mir weiterhin externe SSD im Einsatz. Diese müssen schnell sein, bestenfalls so schnell wie die interne Mac SSD, um damit aufwendige Video- und Fotobearbeitungen durchführen zu können. Meine erste schnelle externe Thunderbolt 3 SSD, war eine Samsung MU-PB2T0B/EU Portable SSD X5, in 2021. Diese sehr gute SSD ist bei mir auch weiterhin im täglichen Dauereinsatz an einem MacBook M Pro.. Da Samsung mit der T7 und T9, aus mir unerklärlichen Gründen, keine für Mac geeigneten schnellen Thunderbolt SSD mehr anbietet, musste für den MacMini M2 Pro eine andere schnelle Thunderbolt SSD her. Und die SanDisk ist eine der ganz ganz wenigen externen Thunderbolt SSD, welche auch am Mac Thunderbolt Anschluss die beworbene Geschwindigkeit erzielt, da diese SSD eine echte Thunderbolt 3 Schnittstelle hat. Was sich am Ende auch im recht hohen Preis ausdrückt im Vergleich zu Platten die zwar mit Thunderbolt werben, aber nur eine lausige USB-C Schnittstelle verbaut haben. Aber Achtung, mit dem von SanDisk beigefügten minderwertigen Thunderbolt Kabel wie mit den meisten der erhältlichen günstigen Thunderbolt Kabel funktioniert die Platte nicht richtig und ist auch langsam. Es muss ein hochwertiges echtes Thunderbolt 3 oder 4 Kabel sein, bei mir für 60 € das Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Kabel. ​​​Der Preis für dieses Kabel ist nicht überzogen. Vergleichstests haben belegt, dass die Wettbewerber zwar als Thunderbolt deklarierte Kabel zum halben Preis bieten, die aber überhaupt nicht dem Intel Standard entsprechen. Da werden nur 6, 8 oder 12 der 24 PINS belegt, die PINS werden zudem überbrückt und am Chip und an der Abschirmung wird ebenso gespart. Am Ende erreicht man mit diesen Fake Kabeln nur eines, Verbindungsabbrüche, Geschwindigkeitseinbrüche und Systemabstürze. Diese Platte hier, mit dem richtigem Thunderbolt Kabel am Mac Thunderbolt Anschluss liefert was versprochen wird, nämlich fast die gleich hohen Geschwindigkeiten wie interne SSD und dabei wird sie auch nicht übermäßig heiß, was ich ausgiebig getestet habe. Beim Schreiben von 1,5 TB am Stück auf die Platte erreicht die Platte zudem dauerhaft etwa 2950 MB/s. Normalerweise müsste man 3 Sterne abziehen, dafür das SanDisk weiterhin nur dieses Billig Kabel beifügt. Ehrlicher wäre, wenn Sie gar kein Kabel beilegten oder aber nur als Option zum entsprechenden Preis ein hochwertiges Kabel mit anbieten würden, wo man aber sicher ist, dass es auch funktioniert. Ich gebe dennoch 5 Sterne für diese sehr schnelle, sehr kompakte und reisetaugliche 4 TB SSD.
