Please read before purchase
Giving 5 stars so this posts - this is the worst alexa ever!!!! Honestly if people have ones that work, let me know how?! It doesn’t understand anything, it rarely does what we ask, touch screen barely works. It’s so frustrating!!!!!!

Can’t get it to work, refund not issued after 3 weeks
Very difficult to use. 99% of the time it doesn’t do what we want. And, the device is super slow which makes it even more frustrating to trouble shoot. I bought this device for my ten year old. I thought this would be perfect because it could function as an alarm clock and stereo for her. She sings all of the time and I liked that it would show her the lyrics to the songs she loves. When we could get music to play, it sounded good. But we could not access any of the kids screens we see out there on you tube and other feeds. I called twice for support, spent almost an hour each time. Sometimes Alexa suggests that we ask “Alexa open skills skills.” (Why two skills???) I just asked her that now and nothing happened. I’ve removed all time/user restrictions to make sure that wasn’t the issue and it still doesn’t work. I just asked the device to play music. No response. Also, I see that many people have the Echo set to a resting position of a clock. Ours won’t do that. This should be so simple! I find it frustrating that we are directed to the device, the general Alexa app on the parent phone and the kids app on the parent phone to do stuff. Like I choose the clock face on the device but then had to go to the parent app to choose the 12 hour format (originally sets to 24 format.) Why can’t all of the settings be in the parent Alexa app? I’ve watched several videos on how to get the clock display to show but instead the screen just shows a picture of a fantasy city and the time is a tiny view in the upper right hand corner. I tried calling customer support twice. Very long phone calls and the people were not able to figure it out. Lastly, when I was reviewing the ads the photos showed Percy Jackson and Harry Potter books. I have looked everywhere and could not find that or get access to it. We ended up returning this on 12/21/25. It is now 1/14/26 and the refund still shows as processing. If we could have gotten this to work, I would have loved it….clock/alarm with a song, music with lyrics, Alexa video calls, Alexa AI assistance, parent controls. But I’ve spent waaaaaay to much time trying to to figure this out. And it’s not just me. My husband also tried to figure out how this operates and couldn’t figure it out either. Aside from the settings screen, these are the views we have. Maybe on 3 occasions we were able to access the view with all of the widgets/skills that a child can use but most of the time the device doesn’t respond. Even now, I ask it do something and it does nothing. Very disappointed. Also, the lowest volume is not low. You can press the button to make it louder and softer, but the lowest volume setting is what I would call medium volume. Update: I really wanted this to work so we tried buying another one from a local store that offered tech support. Once we turned off the Amazon Kids + setting, it works somewhat. Note that there are news headlines that cycle through the resting screen about everything from Hollywood headlines to stock market news. Our attempts to turn that off have been unsuccessful and we still cannot get the device to just show the clock face when not in use. But, we are keeping it. This experience could be so much better if there were comprehensive instructions.

A Vibrant Hub of Learning and Entertaining with Parental Controls
Pros: 1. Kid-Friendly Design: The Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) Kids is thoughtfully designed for children, featuring vibrant colors and a sturdy build that's both visually appealing and durable. 2. Parental Controls:Robust parental controls allow for a secure and controlled environment, ensuring age-appropriate content and usage limits. 3. Educational Content: The device provides access to a wide range of educational content, including interactive games, informative videos, and skill-building activities, contributing positively to a child's learning experience. 4. Entertainment Hub:From streaming music to managing schedules and routines, the Echo Show 5 has become an entertainment hub for my child, offering diverse activities within one device. 5. Audible Books Integration: The device seamlessly integrates with Audible, making it an excellent companion for storytime. The visual aspect of the Echo Show adds an interactive element to the audio experience. 6. Customizable Clock Faces: The ability to personalize the clock faces allows for a fun and engaging aesthetic that suits a child's taste. 7. Compact Size:The compact size of the Echo Show 5 is ideal for a child's bedroom, fitting easily on a nightstand or desk without taking up too much space. Now for the Cons: 1. Intensive Setup: The initial setup and configuration was pretty easy and a good guide was provides. This product works through the Alexa app and the parental controls will be on your device. This can be a bit overwhelming for parents, especially those new to smart home devices. The learning curve might require some time and patience. I’m still sorting through how to enable certain routines, schedules, or games and have it work seamlessly on the Alexa device. It can sometimes be frustrating figuring out how to navigate what you want and how to get it and navigate around the parental controls—especially if your child is right on the older edge of these controls and might also want some older content, yet still needs parental controls for certain browsing aspects etc… 2. Limited Third-Party App Integration:While the device offers a variety of features, the range of third-party app integration might be limited compared to other devices, potentially restricting certain functionalities. In summary, the Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) Kids is a fantastic addition to a child's bedroom, providing a safe and entertaining environment with educational benefits. Despite some navigation and implementation challenges, the device's versatility and kid-friendly features make it a valuable gadget for both parents and children alike.

Doesn’t have much to do on the touch screen
This echo show 5 seems to be really good quality. It has a nice weight to it and an easy to use touchscreen that doesn’t lag. It has good sound quality and can easily understand what you are saying, even for my son who still has a little lisp since he’s only 5! It’s a smaller size so it’s able to fit almost anywhere but still a good enough size that you can easily use the touchscreen. I would’ve given it 5 stars but the only thing I didn’t like was I bought this so my son could video call his grandma, aunt and sister who live in different states and that has been harder than expected to set up. And then when you do set it up, it goes based off the parents contacts- there’s no way to change the names in the child’s device. So for example, my boyfriend is under “Hubby” in my contacts so he is displayed as “Hubby” as well in my son’s allowed contacts. So the only way to change the names in the child’s contact list is to change the names in your own contact list which can make things confusing. And I was also hoping the touch screen could be used for more, like little games and there would be more things my son could use the screen for. It also still has mostly adult settings- while you can choose a wallpaper fit for a child, you choose what info you want their Echo to show and the categories are news, sports & all more stuff that caters to adults which left his echo show with nothing to really display. So aside from being able to video call and having a wallpaper, everything my son can do on this is pretty much just voice controlled- like asking Alexa questions, etc. there’s not much he can do on or with the screen which was kind of disappointing. I still haven’t figured out how to work the video calling and I’m pretty tech savvy. He got this for Christmas and I’m still trying to get it set up correctly. At one point I factory reset it to start over, and when I did that it completely reset it as a regular adult one with no kid settings at all. Then I went in settings to change it back to kid settings and it isn’t saving. I was going to return it but decided to keep it because he was so excited about calling his grandma and aunt so hopefully I figure it out.
