The KB is narrower and you can use regular worst weight yarn (4). It all depends on what you are making and the yarn you are using. I find the Boye (plastic) looms okay for the price...nothing spectacular. The pegs are easier to loosen and break. The KB is well made of wood and decent pegs. I have several of the KB looms including the 28" with extenders for sweaters and blankets, the 18" AIO loom for shawls and medium size stuff and the sock looms (all 3). Actual I prefer Cindwood looms but they are price prohibitive for me so KB is my second choice. That's not to say Boye is bad, but you get what you pay for. They are definitely on the low end of the scale for me. All that being said you have to consider how much you will be using your loom too. Mine get heavy use. For example, I knit 10 sweaters, 2 afghans, 20 pairs of socks and slippers, 10 shawls, and close to 100 baby items a year. **Q: Can I knit blankets for a child or a throw?** A: I think you could knit either one of those. A good resource is to locate GoodKnitKisses' facebook page. The lady there is an expert on knitting boards/looms and knows a lot more than I do! **Q: I am looking for something simular to this loom, but automated or with a crank. The repetative action of flipping the stitches makes my thumb ache.** A: I have seen an antique loom with a crank on YouTube. I don't know if anyone currently makes one like that. I would love that too-if I remember correctly, the one with a crank can make a pair of socks in 40 or 45 minutes! It looks like an 18-inch loom and another round loom and another sock loom. Is that right?** A: No, it's just the 18-inch loom (unless you're getting some extra wonderful bundle!). I haven`t made a mistake, its very good and best of all I can ply various yarns together to make the thicknesses I need, so not limited to just one type of yarn. this does them all, fine to super chunky.
