What could be so great about it? Well, I was pretty much wrong in my assumption, while it shares some of the same dimensions as the S1R, it’s a new light from the ground up with some nifty features.You may ask, what is HCRI and why pick the HCRI version vs the regular version? HCRI stands for High Color Rendering Index. This index is a scale from 0 to 100 that indicates how accurate a light source is at rendering color when compared to a "reference" light source. There are a lot of resources online if want to read into CRI more. For reference this light has a CRI of 90, which can be classified as a HCRI light.What’s in the Box? 1. Olight S1 Mini Baton HCRI with Pocket Clip 2. Battery (Olight RCR123a Button-Top Protected 650 mAh 3.7V Lithium-Ion with Integrated Charger) 3. Micro USB Charging Cable 4. Wrist Strap/Lanyard - Olight refers to this as a lanyard and unless you have a head the size of an apple, it’s a wrist strap 5. User Manual – In 18 different languages 6. Although, I do not think they are available to purchase separately at the time I purchased the S1 Mini.I like to compare this to the S1R since that is what I own. So, a few companions of the S1R vs. S1 Mini Baton HCRI:Illumination Differences: Turbo Mode: S1R - 900 Lumens; S1 Mini HCRI - 450 Lumens; S1R Turbo Mode is 450 Lumens brighter than the S1 Mini HCRI High Mode: S1R - 300 Lumens; S1 Mini HCRI - 250 Lumens; S1R High Mode is 50 Lumens brighter than the S1 Mini HCRIPhysical Dimensions - This is a tiny light! Much easier to pocket, you hardly notice it’s there: Height Comparison: S1R - 66.08 mm; S1 Mini HCRI - 54.07; S1 Mini HCRI is 12.02 mm shorter than the S1R Diameter Comparison: S1R - 21.07 mm; S1 Mini HCRI - 21.17 mm; S1 Mini HCRI is .1 mm wider than the S1R - However, even with the minuscule difference in width, the S1R Traffic Wand/Diffuser fits just fine. Weight Comparison (Fully loaded with the Pocket Clip and Wrist Strap/Lanyard attached): S1R - 58 Grams (2.05 oz.); S1 Mini HCRI - 47 Grams (1.66 oz.); S1 Mini HCRI is 11 Grams (.39 oz.) lighter than the S1RCharging the S1 Mini HCRI:This is the first battery I’ve ever seen that has an integrated charging circuit within the battery itself. On the positive end of the battery is a Micro-USB port where you can use the included (or any standard Micro-USB) cord to charge the battery. There is a small LED that glows red when the battery is charging and switches to green once charged. I used a spare Apple charger that provides 1 Amp of output. The initial charge out of the box took 1 Hour 15 minutes. A full recharge with the same Apple charger took 2 Hours 49 Minutes.Minor Annoyances:I do have two minor annoyances with the unit. The first one relates to the Magnetic Tail-Cap. The S1R’s magnet is quite strong and will easily attach to anything, mine will even attach to the pocket clip of the S1 Mini HCRI and stay attached w/o sliding down the clip. However, the S1 Mini HCRI will attach to the S1R’s clip, but immediately slides down the clip. Now, this is a bit of an extreme use case, but it just means that the S1 Mini HCRI may not attach to everything as you want it to. With all that said, give the S1 Mini HCRI a wider metallic surface to attach to, it holds its weight just fine. The second annoyance is again with the Magnetic Tail-Cap. This time, it’s with the interference with the pocket clip. You need to gently lift up on the pocket clip to screw the cap to the body of the light. Otherwise, it will never line up and you risk cross-threading the cap onto the body. The pocket clip retention is key to keeping the light attached to your pocket, a backpack strap, or even the bill of a hat so it’s easy to see why the pocket clip has so much tension on it. However, it’s just something you will need to pay attention to when you are putting the cap back on. It becomes second nature to remove the tension from the threads quite quickly.Finally, Run Time!With a fully charged battery loaded into the light, I double clicked the power button to get it to go to Turbo. After about 1 minute it drops from Turbo to High. I must mention that this is a very gradual drop to high mode, is a bit of a challenge (for me) to notice when it exactly drops down to high. It ran on high for 58 minutes. I must say, the light is VERY warm at this point, almost too warm. After the 58 minutes, it dropped to medium for 9 minutes 30 Seconds. After that, it dropped to low for 10 minutes 6 seconds before finally turning off. The total run time was 1 hour 17 minutes and 36 seconds. Pretty impressive for a tiny 650 mAh battery.Overall thoughts:I like this light quite a bit. Even though it’s not as bright on turbo mode as the S1R, it really does a great job at illuminating objects and is smaller and lighter and easier in the pocket. I’ve included a comparison photo of the spot on my gray wall. The S1R is on the left, S1 Mini HCRI on the right. Additionally, I included a photo of night time illumination of an area. I thought it was quite impressive. The S1 Mini HCRI is also $15 cheaper than the S1R. A great buy if you ask me and it’s easy to look over the two minor annoyances I listed. I have several Olight flashlights, but my S1R tends the be the one I’m always grabbing to take out and about. With that said, the S1 Mini will replace my S1R in my everyday bag as its weighs less, similar brightness on high mode, and I usually have access to a Micro-USB cable to utilize the new charging feature of the S1 Mini. Additionally, I like the new texture that is on this light vs the S1R. It is slightly smoother. To me, its more visually appealing than the S1R as well. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great as a lantern, very bright and long lasting. *by S***I on Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2018* I love this light. Just took it backpacking and used it as a lantern for the whole group. Clipped it to a tree branch and it provided plenty of light for all of us to cook and talk in camp with no fire (very dry here right now and fire restrictions in place). We had almost brought a lantern but didn't want to lug it. I was amazed this tiny flashlight barely bigger than a CR123A did the job. And it had plenty of charge for a 3 day trip, I had brought spares but I didn't need them. It comes with a special battery that you can plug a micro USB in to charge but I have regular rechargeable CR123's for my Surefire and other flashlights so I brought a couple of those. I tested before the trip and they work fine. My only issues with this light are that I find the pocket clip a little gigantic for actual pocket use (great for attaching to hat brims and small tree branches though!) and the strong magnet in the cap can be a bit of a stickler for attaching to other gear and for reassembling the light. But definitely a 5 star purchase, I feel very well pleased with this light and hope it lasts a long time. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sweet lil light :-) *by K***L on Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2017* This is another great Olight mini flashlight that's based on CR123A & RCR123A batteries. The S1 Mini Baton (0.8 x 0.8 x 2.1 inches) is a bit smaller than the Olight H1R (0.83 x 2.42 x 0.83 in), but still very bright. The difference between the cool white and the HCRI is in color fidelity and brightness. Colors stand out better with HCRI flashlights at the cost of lumens (about 20-25% less). For me, this is worth the trade since it is also easier on my eyes than the cool white light.The S1 Mini Baton sacrifices a few things for size: no magnetic charging system. To charge the light, you have to unscew the tail cap and then plug a Micro USB cabel into the battery's Micro USB port. The battery has a built-in LED indicator that is red when charging and green when fully charge. Although I would love to see Olight's magnetic charging system in this Mini, I think the sacrifice is worthwhile if you're looking for a highly portable flashlight .What I like:* Magnetic tail cap* Size! It's tiny and yet, very bright for a its size* Built-in USB charging system, but this could also be a minus since you would either have to buy a regular battery or one of olight's batteries that has the built-in charging system.* Lanyard has a nice plastic button clip that you press on to adjust. Lanyard also came with a little pin to help you thread it through the metal clip.What I don't like:* Built-in charging system. I'm spoiled by the magnetic charging system. With this one, you have to unscrew the tail cap and then plug a Micro USB cable into the battery. It's cool and it works great, but I'm not a fan LOLThe S1 Mini Baton is comparable to the Klarus Mi1C, but unfortunately, I don't have it so I cannot recommend one over the other. They look very similar and have the same charging system and it looks more like a thrower than a flooder.
