Everything you need to start your adventure into sourdough bread making
I am an avid bread maker using yeast to make bread rolls, wholemeal bread, muffin bread, sundried tomato and parmesan bread, rye bread and ciabatta bread, all of which are made in a Morphy Richards bread maker. But, I have never made a sourdough bread and have always been quite sceptical about making a bread that didn't use yeast. However, our daughter's new boyfriend is a huge advocate of sourdough bread (he works in the baking industry and is very evangelical), so he’s been encouraging me to try it. The opportunity to try making a sourdough is therefore very welcome. The instructions are well laid out and make it clear what to do and when to do it. The kit includes everything you need, including a “stick on” temperature gauge which allows you to see that the correct temperature is being achieved, an elastic band which fits over the jar so that you know when it was last fed, a cloth cover to be used when the mixture is being fed, a tight lid that can be used when the mixture is being saved, a spatula for mixing and the jar which has gradations in millilitres. As the jar shows ML, I was a little confused when the instructions said to leave 100 grams of the mixture before the next feeding presumably this should be done by weight and not against the marking on the jar, but I will be asking for help when creating my first mix to clarify what is needed. As the mix takes at least 7 days to ferment and become usable and then another couple of days for the bread this review will not include the results of an actual sourdough loaf, but I will try and add to this later. In the meantime, this kit includes everything you need to make a sourdough starter which is perfect for the beginner or for someone who needs to start a second batch. I would certainly recommend this kit for the completeness of the items needed and for the excellent instructions.

Useful combination kit
This is a great kit that helps to keep track of your sourdough process. Tracking band is well made and easy to use, jar has a wide neck and the spatula is really useful. My order didn't have a thermometer included which was a bit annoying but not a real breaker, hence 4 rather than 5 stars.

Rusty lid
Jar and spatula great, but the lids of the jar has rusted and now deposits bits of rust in my starter so I have to throw it away. Don't waste your money.

My wife loves it so much, well made set
This set includes a 650ml glass round jar, which is the perfect size for housing and nurturing a sourdough starter. The glass material allows you to easily monitor the fermentation process and ensures that the jar is easy to clean. Additionally, the lid provides an airtight seal, protecting the starter from contamination and maintaining the ideal environment for fermentation. The included silicone scraper is a handy tool for mixing and feeding your sourdough starter, as it's designed to effectively scrape the sides of the jar without damaging the glass. Its flexible nature also ensures you can easily remove the starter from the jar when it's time to bake.A cloth cover with a reusable thermometer design is another great feature of this set. The thermometer allows you to monitor the temperature of your starter, ensuring optimal conditions for fermentation. The cloth cover provides a breathable barrier, allowing airflow while keeping unwanted debris or insects out of the jar.As a gift for my wife, who enjoys baking various types of bread, this sourdough starter jar set was a hit. She appreciated the thoughtful design and practical features that made her sourdough baking experience even more enjoyable. With its well-designed components and user-friendly features, this set is sure to impress and inspire any home baker. Highly recommended!

All you need
If you're starting on your sourdough journey, this offers and easy way to get going, with - apart from the ingredients - all you will need to create and maintain your starter. That said, regular kitchen equipment you already own is more than up to the task, so you are paying a lot for this level of handholding. Perhaps this works best as a gift for sourdough-curious friends.

Very convenient
Handy little jar 🫙 that keeps your starter fresh and healthy. It’s also very nice being able to read the measurements on the side and very easy to clean/maintain. I really like the sticker that can be added to measure the temperature to make sure the environment is optimal for your starter to grow.

Poor quality glass
Excellent idea and with all the accessories makes a lovely gift for a new baker. Unfortunately let down by the poor quality glass. I'd only used it twice, accidently knocked it over on the worktop and a shard of glass broke off, couldn't risk there being any in my beloved sourdough so threw the lot away (luckily I always keep a small amount of sourdough in another, plastic container so all not lost). Sadly, in all honesty I cannot recommend this product. Perhaps if the base was wider!!
