Garmin eTrex® SE, GPS Handheld Navigator

It is very small GPS with an adequate view screen. The buttons, need to be pressed in the center, and are a bit stiff. It took a while to get used to the menus and buttons. Within a day of taking it out on a trail, It became easier to operate. Downloaded the manual from Garmin since the manual that comes with it is just a few pages. I paired it to a large screen phone. It works flawlessly with the phone. You get to see a nice trail map with elevation reading and all waypoints along the trail. The GPS lacks an elevation history page. The map on the GPS is really useless but the electronic compass works perfectly. Several other pages on the GPS give you ample information. This is a back-up for my other Garmin GPS... I found it small but extremely useful and accurate. Hooked it up to a phone at the end of the day and downloaded the information to my phones. The phone has a big nice map. Since I need to carry a phone, linking the two together is easy. If I need extra information I just bluetooth to my phone in seconds. For the cheapest GPS Available it a very good buy.

Now that I finally got it working it is awesome for geocaching when in network range. During the first week I owned this it would not give me the signin code to connect it to geocaching live. After a little over a week it suddenly worked! Now that it's working it is perfect for in network geocaching. 1) the battery lasts forever 2) the screen is fantastic in bright sunlight. In fact the brighter the sun the brighter the screen! 3) it's light 4) it's small and easy to carry 5) geocaching live works great to find the most nearby caches while in network range 6) seems durable and purported to be waterproof which is important while on the trails 7) has USB C connector!!! Woohoo! Cons: 1) kind of wonky screen choices to get to the next cache. Clicky clacking around gets annoying. Maybe I can customize. I hope I can figure out how to customize this. Maybe Garmin will fix this nonsense in their next version 2) need to take the back cover off to access the USB port. But this would help keep it waterproof and keep dust and dirt out of the port so I can live with it 3) it complains about more than 1000 downloaded caches. Why oh why can't I just buy some more memory and let me store 4000 caches on it? What is the big deal Garmin? Just make it happen. I only try to get 1 cache per day so I can live with the wonkiness given the other features. Last time I grabbed some hiking caches with my family I almost exclusively used the SE and only pulled out my phone to look at the high quality trail map

I mean... it 'works'. But I don't like the interface. It automatically starts tracking when you turn it on, which is fine. But it doesn't automatically end the track when you turn it off. The first few times I forgot to stop the track when I stopped for the day. The next time I turned it on I had driven home and it added my house as the last position on the hiking track. I use this to track kayak trips. I also use the fitness app on my watch. The data between the two has been consistent. My watch has issues with occasionally stopping. I think a button is getting pushed while I paddle. It does work well for recording where I start my trips and then using it to get back to where I set up camp if I'm on a larger lake. Right now I just keep it on the pouch on the front of my life jacket. It will show average speed and pace for the entire trip on the app once you download the data. There is also a chart that does show your pace over time. You can use that to figure out your speed. It will also overlay the route on a map. Just remember to start and stop your trip at the right time and save it. And if you pause the tracking to take a break, restart it. I haven't used it yet to preplan a route and follow it. Mostly because I don't have a mount on my kayak where I can easily see the GPS while paddling. I kinda wish I spent the extra money on one of the ones with maps on it, but those are bigger and more expensive.

I selected this device for its ability to track a walk more than to navigate. For example, we are going on a cruise and I would like to have a GPS record of the guided excursions. If we go out on our own, then Google Maps on the iPhone does what we need for navigation. If one were hiking or on bicycle trails, off road, then the navigation aspect becomes important. I like the control buttons instead of a touch screen, because the buttons are rather hard to push and won’t be mashed by mistake. The Garmin Explore app, which I tested with walks in our local park, can export the recorded activity to a track to include in a photo book or epub as an illustration. The GPS locations from iPhone photos matches the eTrek track gratifyingly. It fits what we need, the price was right, and it will be a nice activity tracker.

I love this thing, I give it 5 stars because it’s not trying to be fancy and it works well. If you’re going out hunting or into the woods it’s great for tracking your every movement and the simplicity of adding markers and marking animal tracks and trees is so great! I feel safe with its extremely ridiculous battery life! Never going hunting without it again. Find your way back to your car with ease. Important- it does. It beep when your off track… I like this for my own reasons but some may not.

I have used a Garmin Etrex for years and recently got an Apple Mac. My old Etrex is no longer supported so I purchased the new Etrex SE just so I can go geocaching. There are 3 ways to download geocaches to device. The simplest is through a USB C cable. I did need to download Gamin Explore to use as well. No big deal. I spoke to 3 techs as I could not get it to download. We determined three different issues. One: you still need to open your iPhones system and use a code each time you want to download. Which is strange to me and time consuming. Two: If the geocache you want to download is older, then it will appear as a waypoint and not a geocache. Three: You must be a "Premium Geocache" subscriber in order to download via cable. I am a subscriber, but thought others may want to know. I am just going to use my iPhone off-line for now. I don't go geocaching enough to spend hundreds of dollars to purchase a new GPS unit. I hope this helps you make a decision.

This was to replace my Magellan 315 because the technology has changed so much sense 1999 the Garmin UI is difficult to use and trying to scroll thru letters isn’t helpful my Magellan had a better build quality + feel on the up side this unit is fast and just works well all the time only takes 2AA batteries works well with explore app on iPhone battery life is amazing

Very good for geocaching and using as a bicycling computer/trip logger. This is only single-band but stays around 10ft accuracy even under heavy tree cover. Battery life with lithium AAs about 3-5 weeks with around 5 hours usage per day. Display is very readable in direct sunlight and very crisp contrast

Super une fois qu'on s'y retrouve

Ich benötige für meine Touren ein ganz simples, einfaches, unkompliziertes GPS Gerät, was einfach nur die Tour aufzeichnet und für den Notfall als Back Tracking dient. Und da mein bisheriges Gerät( Garmin eTrex e10 ) nach vielen Jahren jetzt wirklich langsam, seinen gummierten Geist aufgibt war ich auf der Suche nach einem genauso simplen und einfachen Nachfolgegerät. Und für genau diesen Zweck ist genau dieses Gerät, das absolut richtige. Wie gesagt, ich lasse es während Wanderungen lediglich parallel mitlaufen, um einerseits die genaue Strecke aufzuzeichnen und Distanzen und Höhenmeter und Bewegung Zeit zu messen und für den Ernstfall ein Back Tracking zu haben. Über sämtliche anderen Funktionen wie Geocaching oder das anlaufen von vorprogrammierten Punkten kann ich daher hier keine Auskunft geben. Für meine Anwendung Zwecke allerdings ist es wirklich absolut perfekt. Es hat eine nahezu unendliche Batterielaufzeit (ich nutze im Gerät die großen Akkus von IKEA, die angeblich ja Eneloop Akkus sind und auch beim permanenten mit tracken der letzten fünftägigen Outdoor Tour hat sich lediglich ein Einzigster Akku Strich verabschiedet. Zweimal habe ich probehalber auch geschaut, ob das Back Tracking wirklich funktioniert und habe mich vom Gerät über die mit geschriebenen Punkte zurück navigieren lassen und bis auf einige minimale Abweichungen im Bereich unter 2 m vom ursprünglichen Weg funktioniert das wirklich einwandfrei. Wer also ein einfaches simples Gerät ohne große Spielerei und komplizierte Bedienung sucht, an dem er trotzdem das Display nach seinen Vorlieben einstellen gestalten und mit Daten belegen kann, der ist bei diesem Gerät genau richtig.
