Can you use any other scanner app or should i go with the Bluetooth model?

Although I bought this item, I ended up using a similar scanner, OBDLink SX USB: Professional Grade OBD-II Automotive Scan Tool for Windows – DIY Car and Truck Data and Diagnostics (bought the cable from Amazon). I downloaded the software specified on the cable to my laptop and connected the laptop to the OBD port on the car with the cable. Using the software and cable was able to diagnose a Transmission Control Module failure on Ford Focus. Bought a new TCM on ebay and installed it and car worked fine. I bought the FOR-scan cable because I thought the TCM would need to be programmed, but it came programmed from the manufacturer so I ended up not needing it.

Will this work in my laptop if my usb ports are 3.0
