Susan Anderson identified the Outer Child in her trailblazing The Journey from Abandonment to Healing. Because her readers and counseling clients so resonated with this breakthrough concept, Anderson developed these tools, practices that allow readers to move beyond awareness of their issues (where many get stuck) and into change. Like physical therapy for the brain, her techniques comfort the scared Inner Child, calm the impulsive Outer child, and cultivate a wise Adult. As these behaviors are repeated, new neural pathways are established. The integrated Adult, Inner Child, and Outer Child can now work together to realize goals. Specifically addressing issues such as procrastination, depression, and anxiety, Anderson helps readers pause their patterns long enough to blaze healthier, happier trails. Review: An overused phrase, but this book has helped to change my life! - I discovered this book after coming to the conclusion that my irrational or self-sabbotaging behaviour was due to a bad experience from the past. This book is the first that I have found that takes you through the reasons for such behaviour, and explains why you feel that you cannot control what you are doing whilst also taking away the blame for this at the same time. This would seem to be an important point in order to allow yourself to fully understand what is going on and how to deal with it. The methods for dealing with such behaviours are very different to any I had previously come across, are incredibly simple, and allow you to work through things at your own pace. Indeed, I think they are useful tasks to continue using even when you feel you have gained more control over your feelings. I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone wanting to understand more about why they engage in negative behaviour and who want to take steps to improve their life as a whole. I feel it is one I will revisit again and continue to learn from for a while to come. Review: The thing I find most beautiful about Separation Therapy is that I feel like I ... - I have been practising Susan's method now for 3 months and it it probably the most potent therapy I've ever done. I'm blown away. The thing I find most beautiful about Separation Therapy is that I feel like I am becoming my own therapist! In the past three months I have started to let go of my quick-fix repetition compulsions and am starting the engage more and more in a more self-compassionate, wise and caring way, After being in therapy for 20 years and trying out a myriad of methods, I am excited to keep on practising my dialoguing between Little, Big and Outer and I am excited about my future. Thanks Susan, you are a star! Oh, and Susan's workshops are, let's say: badass! She's so warm, intelligent and authentic.

The missing piece of the jigsaw
This book is brilliant. It was like a eureka moment for me, not only because it is absolutely on the button for identifying self-esteem and self-sabotaging issues but, most importantly, because it allows the reader to address them without falling all too easily into the trap of being more self-critical and therefore contributing to or continuing to perpetuate the very problems that you are seeking to free yourself from. A huge “thank you” to the author for this excellent and extremely helpful book.

Taming is hit n miss.
Interesting and informative. I tried to tame my 4 legged child after reading it, he wasn't having it though, he still screamed for food and a fresh water filled bowl. He even went and laid a cable in the bathroom. Best used for ape-like species.

Will change your life for the better.
I brought this book on the back of another review. I have read loads of self help books and many have not been helpful. This one on the other was a light bulb moment. This book has already started to change my life. A must if you want to tame your outer child and get on with your life.

Amazing book, enlightening tools to help understand and change stubbornly destructive behaviours
This changed my life for the better. Finally I could understand why I and significant others act out in ways it seems we cannot control at the time. Very insightful with brilliant steps to knowing more about that part of ourselves, and how to integrate it to change for the better.

Powerful and important book
This book was recommended by my mental health practitioner. If you have issues with your childhood, struggle to control emotions and actions and feel like you are in constant argument and conflict within yourself then this is a very eye opening book. I feel like I highlighted nearly every sentence because they all seemed so relevant.

Great book to help you control your own self sabotage
Great book to help you admit your own self sabotaging behaviors and to finally stop. It made me realize how many behaviors I was engaging in that were embarrassing me, putting me on edge, or making me feel raw and exposed such as oversharing personal information and excessive arguing. This is a good book for you in you grew up in a family environment where childish behaviors were not controlled or where your caregivers did not place any importance on taking care of your emotional health and well being. I thought I was a disciplined person before I read this book, and to a degree that was true, but it introduced discipline into an area of my life I had never considered before: my emotion-fueled, impulsive behaviors. I used to think I was honoring my emotions by acting impulsively, but I've now realized that these impulsive behaviors are doing more harm than good and that there are other ways to hold space for my emotional life.
