The Crafter's Guide to Papercutting: The complete guide to cutting paper for artworks, greetings cards, keepsakes and more

Excellent Introduction to the Craft
This is an excellent book, that at first viewing may appear a little basic. However, for someone who has no experience at paper-cutting it is ideal. It has a very short history section, followed by clear instructions for technique, tools etc. There are good, clear photos to back up the text. The designs are a lovely mix of traditional folk and modern suitable for display or greetings cards. The templates are clear and all in all a very good beginners book (I am a beginner, so it's great!). Providing you have sharp crafters knife and cutting board or a pair of sharp embroidery scissors, you can pitch straight in with the first project. Each project is laid out on a double-page spread so it is easy to see and use. There is a section covering tools and materials needed for that project, together with the page where the template is (they are at the back of the book) and ideas for different papers and display mounting. This is followed by clear steps with a photo for each step and "Take Special care" boxes eg "Remember, if designing your own, include detail, such as the rabbit, and make sure the design is attached on all sides".This would make a lovely present for any adult or teenager who has even the slightest leaning in the creative sphere.

Good, simple designs for greeting cards
I’m new to papercutting and this is my favourite book. Simple, effective designs which work well for greeting cards - which is what I wanted to make.

Getting craft-knife blisters from overuse of this book!
I'm already a fan of Emily Hogarth's work and this book is an excellent introduction to papercutting - a hobby I'm looking to develop. I understand the book is very similar to 'Cut Up This Book', and although the author suggests copying or tracing the templates so they can be reused, it's great fun to chop up the book and use it creatively. I'd usually see this as heresy, but hacking at paper is the whole point of this activity, and it feels like a project-y guidebook more than a pristine book that should be taken care of.The book is full of great ideas, projects, templates and guidance on how to begin. The chapter on tools to use and how best to use scissors and a craft knife/scalpel is proving particularly useful. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to start a simple but rewarding hobby - particularly if you can't get out of the house much. The only down-side is that it would be better spiral-bound rather than stitched paperback. When working on a project, you have to crack the spine of the book so the instructions stay open.

Inspiring
As mentioned in the previous review, this lovely book has a short section on the history (with old and new examples to aspire to) as well as the cutting and designing aspect of this craft, so you can get creative yourself. But the designs included are stunning. All the templates are full size and one-sided so you could cut them straight out, if you can stand to damage this gorgeous book. It's the designs which really make this book worth it - highly useable and varying in difficulty, Hogarth shows you how to use them to decorate candles, make pictures (I an especially pleased to see cuts in more than one colour, which most books avoid), cards, tags, banners, cupcake decorations, mobiles and beautiful shadow puppets, which are often the most recognisable example of this genre. A beautiful book and a useable book.

Great introduction.
Received this today and am delighted. The first part of the book has a lovely overview - history, tips and how to design your own. The second section deals with 20 different projects - instructions, cutting tips, how to adapt the design to make variations etc. The final part of the book (about a 1/3rd of the pages) has ready to cut and copy templates backed by coloured paper. Very well put together, the book would make a great gift and could be used to make great gifts and artful decorations.

Good book but not over keen on the templates
I like the book and instructions are fairly clear, but there could have been a few more templates, especially more refined ones.

This book provides a good introduction to the craft and even at the young ...
I recently took up paper craft over the winter months. One of our granddaughters is forever drawing and painting and has shown an interest in what I was doing with paper craft. This book provides a good introduction to the craft and even at the young age she is, she wants to pursue some of the projects presented in this book. I personally find them a bit of a challenge, especially if the television is playing in the background, nonetheless it is enjoyable to see the finished article each time. I recommend this book.

can't wait to get started
The book arrived in perfect conditions - so far i've just went through it and it offers a general history of papercutting (very very brief), indicates the tools needed, and proposes some projects to get to grips with several aspects of the whole thing (you can use paper and templates available in the book). Will start very soon with my first attempts!

Exactly right for beginners
Loved the templates in the back. I have completed several of the projects successfully and I am still a beginner. Haven't figured out why they used such pretty paper on the back sides of the templates, but otherwise the book is exactly what I hoped for.
