does it wash out completely? does it gum up your machine?

No, it does not wash out completely. I tried to wash out 6 small dots of it on black Kona cotton just one day after using it. Misting it with water did nothing. In the end, I had to scrub it with Dawn dish detergent in order to get the majority of it out of the fabric; the rest of it just will not come out.

Is this really any different than Elmer's washable school glue?

Yes. It's very differant. Its hold is fast and secure. And it's not runny, a little bit goes a long way.

Can the pieces be pulled apart for repositioning if necessary?

It can be pulled off and repositioned. I am using it to temporarily glue my quilting pieces before I iron them onto the interfacing.

Does this tip screw on to a 4oz. bottle of Elmer's School Glue (replace Elmer's screw top with this one)?

You could also refill this bottle with elmer's glue then you wouldn't have to worry about the lid fitting on the glue bottle.
