Is it really required to turn to 55 every time before i set the timer?Why?

The timer is a mechanical one, it doesn't need battery, but it requires to turn to 55 every time so as to activates the spring. It's like a wind-up alarm clock, you have to wind it for the alarm to go off and also for the timer to work.

Does it make a ticking sound as it counts down?

It does. It’s not very loud at all though.

If you don't turn it to 55 first, will it ring with a shorter ring? Or just no noise at all?

For best results you need to wind to 60 then set your time. The winding part will give you the longest ring. It’s all mechanical. It’s nice and loud as well and sounds like a school bell.

Is this mushroom timer loudest in all mechanical timers? I really need a loud one. I used to have a bird timer, but the sound is too low.

Super cute & works as it should! The timer went out on the pizza oven at work so I bought this to help remember when to turn and take the pizza out. I usually set it for 4-5min each time & have never had an issue with it not going off. Reliable, accurate, and loud! I like it & would recommend.
