A traditional tool for traditional craftsmen
Fed up with dress-makers tapes or retractable ones that kept breaking or flexing at the wrong time, I finally invested in this folding wooden ruler of the type used by craftsmen for, I dunno, but probably centuries. Straight away, I discovered why they still make 'em today. They stay straight when you want them to be, they're great to run a pencil along for marking up, the markings, in both inches and centimetres, are easy to read. In short, it does the job. Fully extended, it's a metre long, that's over a yard for old folks like me, brought up in the dark ages of imperial measurement. Hinges and ends are good, strong brass, so the thing looks and feels like it'll last a good while. It's even got a little conversion table on it. All in all, a very good buy.Incidentally, in writing this review I was asked to rate it on 'Sheerness.' What is 'Sheerness?'

good quality old fashioned carpenters folding rule.
Most rules are now plastic of some form and prone to break if dropped. This one should last me a lifetime if I do not lose it like my last one.

Not great
Bit stiff and slightly warped on arrival that only got worse over time.

Bit shabby.
Finnish not so good as i gad to give the woos a light sanding as so get Smoove loose wood around the edges. The coating on the bras looks shabby so i had to remove it and gave it a polish. Not worth the money but it looks fine now.

A great piece of kit.
I am really pleased with this ruler. The hinges are strong and tight and the wood a lovely colour, with clear markings. This should age well and become a good companion.

Quality to Cost Lacking
My grandfather and my father both had rules like this and after decades nostalgia made me want one also. I was excited to see this for sale and waited paitently while it made its way across the Atlantic. When I opened the package I was almost immediately dissapointed. As others have noted, the finish is a bit rough, a little light sanding with 400 -600 should smooth the edges and the overall finish. Also noted before are the hinges at 10 and 29.5 inches do not seem to be at right angles and do not fold true flat. The markings on the wood are accurate enough and deep enough so that some light finish sanding should not hurt too much. The markings on the brass are fairly light, and on the hinge section do not come to the edge of the rule, they may not stand up to use very well. The most disappointing thing though is the general lack of straightness. Part of this may be due to the fact that there is no brass edging down the length of the tool. This allows the wood to warp, twist, and cup. Also, the cuts along the length are not straight, giving a bit of gull wing appearance when fully extended.I would not recommend these to a friend.
