A difficult choice - but the right choice.
I really wasn't sure whether to buy this game. There were so many mixed reviews and so much negativity surrounding the game that it nearly put me off. What sold me was the awesome footage of magic and tech all in one world.Well I was not disappointed. Honestly, this game is hard - and battling through the first 10 hours was brutally challenging, while I started to understand the world, and understand I shouldn't fight everything. But with this challenge comes the ultimate feeling as you start to gradually grow in power. For me, this is one of my favourite games, and has had well over 60 hours of play already!

Flawed but never the less good
I liked the concept of this game a lot. It's a open world futuristic survival game with some interesting factions, the world looks very nice and the story for the most part is interesting. The combat is a bit janky compared to things like Mass Effect and Cyberpunk but it's not a game breaker as the world makes you want to know more and go further. The only real problem I had is it seems to take way too long to level up to the point you get any decent weapons. I think I'd been playing about 40 plus hours and I was still getting killed by a few big bugs which I was trying to fight with something not far off a pointed stick as I hadn't reached the necessary requirements to equip a gun. If I started again I'd definitely invest all my points in weapons not in anything much else from the start. Who cares about charisma and intelligence when you're regularly rat food (Literally).

Quite a glitchy game
It takes a long time to get to a point in this game where you aren't pretty much killed instantly by any enemies. If you can work past that then it is quite enjoyable. However, this has to be one of the worst games I've played so far on the PS4 in terms of stability. It freezes quite a lot when switching between menus and game play, characters will often be floating in impossible positions and I've also encountered a large map area where you can't proceed because you just fall through the ground wherever you try to move. Not sure if it is going to be possible to complete on that basis.

Good fun
Great graphics. Imaginative story etc. Genuinely open World.

One of the best RPGS I have played in recent memory!
This review is purely based off my own opinion, experience and the fun I had with the game.I was initially very reluctant to buy this game after many mixed reviews. However, when the game showed up for £8.99 I went for it and was so glad I did. So here is a breakdown of my thoughts to maybe help you with your decision on Elex:Pros:*Really varied / interesting world considering the small size of the development team.*No carry capacity / weight limit at all! (More RPGS need to do this)*Very interesting factions throughout the game who comment on the state of the world and other factions throughout.*Jet pack feature enabling you to explore all parts of the map with no / very little limitation.*A map / mission system which does not just spew icons everywhere (yes, looking at you Ubisoft!)*Missions can be completed in a multitude of ways with a great choice / consequence system.Cons:*Combat can be quite janky and frustrating at times.*Some dialogue can be quite stilted and awkward at times. In summary, it took me just over 45 hours to complete the game (with also doing a good deal of side content) and I was never bored for a second. In my opinion, this is a true diamond in the rough.

Poor game.
Where to start?I suppose at the beginning with an origin story that makes no sense, your character (very minor spoilers here) is supposed to be a former Alb commander who's lost the substance in his body which granted him all kinds of powers and physical abilities, that being Elex... I can only assume he was in command of toilet cleaning, because he has no combat skills at all, don't the Alb train their troops in melee or ranged combat? or was he in command of a desk? (Think untrained peasant/farmer common in most games)The game's combat is terrible, combat systems that are clunky as hell (think Gothic 3 or later Risen games) with wooden animations, your character moves like a tank, hits like a feather and dies if something even looks at him funny, he also swings like someone wielding a big block of solid metal instead of a weapon, ranged combat is no better, even against weak opponents guns don't do that much damage, and if you had the misfortune of trying to play it immediately after it was released you got a plethora of bugs into the bargain... If all that wasn't bad enough, you can get two, maybe three hits in before your characters stamina is completely out and dodging enemy attacks 'also' requires stamina so you immediately become target practice and dodging does NOT guarantee you won't get hit as enemies can sometimes turn in mid attack, yes even in the air (and I don't mean enemies that should be able to do that). The Story as mentioned above doesn't exactly fit together very well, the conversation systems often leave you with little choice in what you're doing, your character starts with no social skills and purchasing any skills costs a fortune (you can't just spend skill points, you have to buy training), NPC animations are equally wooden, seriously I've played better indie titles... Most of the quests are pretty much standard RPG fare as well, go here, kill that, fetch this item, talk to this person. The world design isn't terrible, the locations aren't exactly that different to what you'd expect from a standard RPG game so it's not exactly appalling there and the graphics aren't 'abysmal' (somewhere between witcher 1 & 2), but there's nothing there that makes you stand and look at the scenery. The difficulty curve however is all over the place, one minute you're 'relatively' easily killing something without taking too much damage, the next you get one-shotted by a creature that isn't any bigger or more dangerous looking, and the only way to see if a creature is lethally dangerous is to aim your bow at it.Overall I'd recommend anyone looking to buy this, wait for a sale... The trailers make this game look WAAAY better than it actually is and if nothing else it'll give them time to patch the hell out of this game, it may actually be worthwhile to those who aren't Piranha Bytes fanboys.

Bad UI and character animation
4 years later and still unplayable. Half of the UI is gone?! They added a lot of meaningless numbers but you can't even check how much HP you have?! In the RPG game?!?! Combat is dull and fiddly, can't skipp dialogues :( Only story trying to get you interested but it is like wathing Marvel movies on the 480p resolution...

I dont recommend this game
Edit: just finish playing it. Man, this game is a train wreck. I had big expectations for it just based soley on all what i discovered exploring. The ending was very underwhelming. Not worth the horrible combat and difficulty. I thought the story wouldve saved this train wreck but, no, it did not. It was well thought out tho, i mean, the origin of the hybrid, the truth of calaan, .... I cant believe its still disappointing. Im just going to run through Elex 2 on easy mode just for the closure. Im not in the mood to torture myself and risk a heart attack. I still do not recommend this game unless you get it for free, and even then be warned, Dark Souls is easier and more fun than this train wreck.Edit: yea the combat really makes this game irritating to play. Its just plane not fun at all. If you pay more than $5 for this game then you got robbed like me. Not worth it. If you can use cheats then yea the story and world is worth it. Missions are pretty cool too. So, thats to tell you how bad the combat is.This game is great. What drags it into the mud is its uninspiring and very garbage combat. The combat and controls ruin this game. If it did not have a good story and world building i would not play it.
