What is the hole size and how far apart are the holes. Will it fill with ashes?

The holes are about 1/8 of an inch, but the directions tell you to face them horizontally towards the back of the fireplace. The flames go up, but the holes should not fill with ash.

just making sure but this is to be placed under the log grate and will eventually be covered in hot coals as the fire burns correct?

Yes, the lighter tube goes under the log grate and ignites the logs above. Once the fire is going, you turn off the lighter. I really don't have hot coals covering the lighter, it's just grey ashes and they fall past the lighter tube, to the bottom of the fireplace. I clean those out when they get a few inches deep.

Is one side of the pipe closed off so the gas and flames come out of the ⅛ holes and not all the way through to the other side

what kind of hose/fitting do I need in order to hook up to a 20 lb propane tank

This unit is designed to be attached to a permanent installation in your fireplace. I don’t see how it could be used with a flexible hose unless it was outdoors. Even then it would be difficult
