A solid show becomes a great one
Here, we get to the meat of Hunter X Hunter. While Episodes 27-36, the Heaven's Arena arc, are largely just a standard tournament arc, they still serve a needed purpose. They flesh out the world's magic system and explain how different abilities work, which becomes very important information later on. However, things really kick up a notch in the next storyline, known either as the Phantom Troupe or Yorknew City Arc. Here, we learn a lot about Kurapika and what drives him, as well as about the varied members of the Phantom Troupe. Unlike some shonen series, which stretch fights out for multiple episodes, the fights in this series never extend beyond an individual episode before moving on to something else. Each arc is also distinct from what came before, infusing some much needed variety. Heck, this arc feels more akin to a crime drama (albeit with superpowers) than anything else. As far as production values go, HxH leaves its competitors in the dust. The animation and artwork are great and even seem to improve as the story goes on, which is rare in anime. The Viz dub is really good and features the return of some of my favorite voice actors: Dorothy Fahn as Melody and Beau "Jet Black" Billingslea as Light Nostrade. Their voices are always a pleasure to hear. As far as the main cast though, Cristina Vee overcomes her early unevenness and really shines as Killua. The same goes for Erika Harlacher as Kurapika and Erica Mendez as Gon. One really gets the feeling of Killua and Gon becoming fast, close friends from their work. The only complaint I have is that the set ends in the middle of the arc, but that seems like a nitpick considering the strength of the material and its presentation.

Heaven's Arena!!
If you are purchasing this, you've most likely seen the show so I won't delve deeply into how amazingly awesome this anime is. I won't bother telling you that the Heaven's Arena story arc is one of the most action (and information) packed story arcs in this series that is full of action-packed story arcs. I'll let you experience the outstanding character development and foreshadowing that they put into these episodes... I'll just let you enjoy it and nod my head in approval.

Yay!!
Love it, I've watched what i had available of the sub and after rewatched whatever they had dubbed and its wonderful whether you prefer sub or dub Its all down to preferance really but im glad i have the option. Anyway, im very happy that they added double the episodes! Just waiting for Volume 4 to pop up so i can pre-order again. While i wait i'll def be searching for those last 2 seasons i need to watch, netflix left me on a cliffhanger.

Very pleased to see that Viz has upped the disc count ...
Very pleased to see that Viz has upped the disc count to four discs. Absolutely worth the purchase considering it holds both Phantom troupe and heavens arena arc. Two spectacular arcs all in one box.

Previously, I've tested this set on an older Bluray player (now retired and left in the dungeon known as the basement) and the playback was a horrible experience. Now that I've gotten a new Bluray player to test out the disc set, I've come to realize that the playback issues were likely not of the disc set but mostly of the old player. The playback (of Volume 3) on the new player had no noticeable issues. I'm changing the rating to 5 stars. Update 2: The set also plays seamlessly on PS4 Pro. ________ Previous review: Headline: "Could've been one of the favourite Bluray purchases, but..." Rating: 2 stars I was enticed to buy this one (Volume 3) since it has one of my favourite arcs from the series (Yorknew City arc). Volume 3 also has good value for your purchase unlike volumes 1 and 2 which are more expensive AND each with only half the amount of episodes as volume 3. Not very consistent on the pricing, I must say.... The main issue is the playback. Out of the four discs, I've tested discs 1 and 4. Disc 1 failed to play as it froze on the first scene (the first scene is Gon's head) for a while and rebooted back to the menu screen upon playing for the first time. I then tried using episode selection to play the first episode on the disc, and it actually played, although it froze on the first scene until I pressed play again. So it still lagged, but it played without rebooting this time. Then I tried skipping the parts, and sometimes the parts of the episodes would lag. The ending credit (for the first episode on the disc) lagged the most as it lagged numerous times throughout the entire duration of the ending credit. The lyrics translations for both the opening theme and ending theme (for the first episode of the disc) lagged and did not appear until seconds later. I then replayed the ending credit and it lagged again, and nearly just as bad as the first time I played it. Then I replayed it again for the third time, and this time was significantly better as I don't recall experiencing any lags. But wait, that's not even the worst part! The worst part is that disc 1 wouldn't even play beyond episode 29 (the third episode on the disc). Disc 1 has a total of 6 episodes, so that means I could not get half the episodes on the discs to play at all. The same problem occurs in disc 4, in which about half of the episodes on the disc cannot even play at all. I'm not sure what to do right now. Maybe I should return it for a new one.... This is not even the first time I've had problems with Bluray playback. I've already bought two Bluray disc products from Amazon and both had playback issues. I've never experienced any problems with DVD playback unless the disc is obviously scratched. None of the Bluray discs I've tested have any scratches at all. I'm really beginning to feel wary about Bluray now.......
