I thought I had followed them pretty well but it became apparent that the galvanised tube I was applying the solution to was not properly cleaned. When I brushed the solution on it was very obvious that I hadn't done a good enough job preparing the surface. It must be as free from any oil, grease or other contaminants as you can possibly get before you apply it. Get that part right and it works very well.
