Works great to keep the lid closed
I purchased this for my recycling can to use when the winds are high as the contents are lighter than my trashcan and tends to blow over and make a mess. I don’t know if it would work to keep out the trash bandits, they tend to be pretty inventive when it comes to getting in places they’re not wanted, but to just keep the lid on it works great. Bear barrier
Work perfect. Bear got trash can the day after I installed it ( trash day) and didn't get to the trash. Me and garbage guys were happy.

Unbearable Results
The kit: cables, screws, latches and carabiners are quality products! Installation is straightforward and uncomplicated. I had the cables positioned for a snug fit. The result of the product’s effectiveness in stopping the neighborhood black bear was NIL. You will notice in the photos that the cables are still secured to the trash can. In part, the design of our trash can could have helped the bear defeat the locking cables. I noticed after installing the cables that this manufacturer makes another set of cables to go across the lid from side to side. Those additional 2 cables may have stopped the bear. We were hopeful that we could again put the garbage outside.

Good, but bear still got in can
We purchased these to try and keep bear out of our trashcan. We installed them super tight, but somehow the bear was still able to pry the side of the can open and get into our trash. Install isn’t breeze with a drill and took less than five minutes. We will be looking for another way to stop bear from getting into our garbage in addition to these straps.

Consider differences in temperature
Due to the material it is made from, it shrinks/tightens a little when it gets colder, making it more difficult to unclasp. And if you install with a little more breathing room, the lid can be lifted.
