## Description

Sony Music Entertainment presents Vladimir Horowitz Live at Carnegie Hall, a deluxe CD edition that gathers together the complete RCA and Columbia recitals that the legendary pianist recorded live at Carnegie Hall between 1951 and 1978 including eight previously unreleased complete concerts, as well as 48 works in previously unreleased recordings all on 41 CDs and a DVD.Since Horowitz accurately claimed that he never played any piece the same way twice, piano-lovers now have the opportunity to hear multiple performances of certain works, and to compare how Horowitz responds to different audiences on different days with variations in nuance, tone color, touch, dynamics, tempo, phrasing, and pedaling. This deluxe edition is accompanied by a 300-pages hardcover book with an introduction by Jed Distler profiling Horowitz and his special relationship with Carnegie Hall, a brief history of Carnegie Hall, an introduction to the previously unreleased recordings from Horowitz's Private Collection, and facsimiles of concert flyers and tickets, as well as comprehensive track listings and historic photographs. BEST!! Numero Uno - Horowitz was unique and these recordings demonstrate his unequalled virtuosity

A must for every every person who enjoys piano music. Horowitz's live performances over 35 years (1943-1978) gave me an understanding of why Horowitz was considered so good. These recordings show how Horowitz changed as he aged.I have heard many very good pianists (both in person and from recordings) but the younger Horowitz was in a class by himself. He demonstrated this in his transcriptions, most significantly his Variations on Carmen (three different performances of it are in this set). Horowitz's Carmen transcription was written and he first recorded it in the 1920's. It was such a display of his virtuosity and skills that was so difficult to play that few other pianists attempted to record it. Arcady Volodos (1996), Denis Matsuev (2003) and Yuja Wang (2012) have given good performances of it. I saw Wang in person give a spectacular performance of it in an encore where she received standing ovations. But she is only 28 which partially explains why she is so fast. She can be seen performing it on YouTube where her hands are so fast that they are a blur. A must for every Horowitz fan are his 1926 recordings (on the Welte Mignon system that can be purchased from amazon) which demonstrate his technical skills which were unequaled at that time. The quality of the 1926 recordings are very good, especially considering that they were recorded almost 90 years ago. These audio recordings (not the DVD) can be heard on Spotify, but Spotify's descriptions contain little info but titles with running time for each piece. This Box set contains a 300 page book with very informative text, detailed descriptions of each recording and fascinating pictures. And the bonus DVD.These recordings show how Horowitz aged and changed. PLEASE READ OTHER REVIEWS WITH SOME EXCELLENT ANALYSES.

    still a stunning surprise

I have a slightly different take on this set compared to the incredibly knowledgeable reviews already posted. I am an experienced collector of classical music recordings but relatively new to Horowitz, and I have been bitten, hard, by the Horowitz bug.Several of the most authoritative reviews suggest this Carnegie Hall collection is enlightening and educational but Horowitz fans will return to the Original Jacket Collection for repeated listening. Not me.The Original Jacket Collection has a stunning (and disturbing) variety of acoustics. This set has a uniformly excellent acoustic that places the piano at close to the ideal distance to appreciate its tone.I thought that the remark that "Horowitz knew how to construct a program" was something above my paltry ability to grasp, but actually the concert programs in the Carnegie Hall set are gorgeous and add to the sense of an intimate occasion to be enjoyed over and over in one's home.I much prefer this set to the Original Jacket set with the obvious caveat that there are many pieces Horowitz recorded professionally that he did not perform at Carnegie Hall apparently, for example most of the Beethoven sonatas. One more thing, I have NEVER listened to an artist's performances chronologically and exhaustively as I now have the opportunity to do for Horowitz, and I am a seasoned record collector. NEVER. So while I don't doubt the erudition of the critics, what patterns of rise and fall would we discern in great artists similarly examined? Do we need some sort of tragic narrative of depression, drugs, and alcohol? Or are we observing something we were not really meant to see, the natural history not of an automaton, but of a great artist?
