How loud is the pump?

I totally disagree with the other answers... the pump is very loud. About as loud as a vacuum cleaner.

can you inflate with a battery operated pump?

Yes you can. Takes a little longer, but very handy when camping where there is no electricity. It has a separate fill area for hand or battery operated pumps.

Does it need to stay plugged in when in use to stay inflated? Or can you inflate and unplug to move to a spot not near an outlet?

Plug it in to inflate it to whatever firmness you desire. Then you can pull the plug and move the mattress to wherever you want. I found that the air mattress did a very good job of holding its inflated pressure for a week.
