The diameter of the threaded portion that is a part of the sensor is 16mm (<5/8"). The white soft plastic ring you refer to is 18mm diameter (<3/4"). The flange on that white plastic ring is 26mm (~1 1/8") diameter. Hope that helps.

When installed in one direction, it makes contact when full; when installed the other direction, it makes contact when empty. Thus, I have one switch at the top of a container collecting water to trigger when it is full; the other switch is at the bottom to trigger when it is empty.

Will these work under water?

Yes, that is how they work. In this installation the circuit is closed until the water is high enough to open it. As the water rises the float goes up, opening the circuit. When the circuit is closed, power goes to a 12Volt solenoid that allows water from an RO/DI unit to flow into the holding tank.
