Review: A Good Bed Makes a Good Difference - I don’t typically write reviews for things I like, or don’t like. If I take the time to write down my opinion it’s generally to complain about truly being disappointed or on rare occasions, like this one, truly amazed. Having my expectations exceeded is a rarity, one in which I’m willing to put my time and words to paper - or screen. This, this is one of those exceptional experiences- and I can’t believe it’s over a mattress of all things. Buying a mattress shouldn’t be hard, but it is. It’s made harder by today’s advertising and BS. We no longer know what the best way is to buy the thing we’ve bought our whole life. Are we being ripped off? The answer is of course yes; but how do we solve that? The answer in this case is Zinus. Perhaps embarrassingly, I put more research into my latest mattress purchase than I did my last car. Maybe because it’s such a personal purchase and one you live with for such a long period of time. What you sleep on, and how you sleep, matters. A decade ago I bought my last mattress. It was a good mattress. It was very expensive. It served me well… for a few years. I extended it’s life far past it’s usefulness by adding memory foam and padding and then again by telling myself it was sufficient, for years. After at least a year of restless nights which I attributed to other causes I finally admitted to myself I needed a new bed. What a pain, literally. This began my research into what to buy and from where. If you’re looking at a Zinus then you’ve undoubtedly looked at the other major players in this category. They’ve sprung up all in the last couple of years because of one major reason - mattress sales are a scam. Unfortunately, so are online mattress sales for the most part. After a lot of research which you can do in your own time using Google, nearly all these ‘online mattress companies’ are actually made in the same factory using nearly identical material. They all add in their own exclusive features but they are mostly the same. The major difference being the name on the box it’s shipped in. Zinus is considerably cheaper than the rest. It is nearly identical to the rest. It’s cheaper because they lower their markup. It really is that simple. The big players in this game pretend to offer a great deal but then markup their mattress by 300% or more. Ask yourself why they can afford to let you sleep on it for 3 months, then pay someone to come to your house and take it to the landfill if you don’t want to keep it. They would literally rather pay someone to throw it away than to take it back. That’s how inexpensive it is for them to make them. The markup is so much that their product becomes disposable. This doesn’t mean they are bad mattresses. In fact, all those name brand online retailers sell great mattresses, nearly identical to the Zinus. They are just incredibly overpriced. Now my review - my mattress rant is over. I hope some find it useful. I bought the ‘Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch / Premium / Ultra Plush / Cloud-like Mattress, King’. With it I also bought the platform bed from Zinus - also because of the incredible price and which I’ll also review. (spoiler, it’s fantastic) The mattress comes compressed in a box of course. That’s how it works. Unlike some other manufacturers it fully uncompresses and is ready for sleep on day 1. There is no chemical smell because it’s not treated with the same nasty chemicals that some other manufacturers put on theirs. I’ve read a lot of ‘explanations’ from the other makers as to why they fill theirs with chemicals, none of which are convincing. My guess, is so that they can sit in warehouses for years and not get moldy. This is without a doubt the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on. If it’s comfortable to you will of course depend on what your definition of comfort is. Zinus makes several different mattresses in varying degrees of firmness. I just happened to luck out buying the right one for me the first time, I think. This one is firm, but giving. It’s the kind of mattress where I can roll around on one side and it doesn’t effect my partner on the other side. You don’t feel movement unless it’s right up against you. At the same time it gives slightly, making it very conforming to your body. One of the most important things to me as a person who is generally hot all the time is that it stay cool, and this does. I didn’t realize it until I got this mattress but I believe one of my issues for such a long time, was being hot. I get no heat from this mattress at all. As an example of just how comfortable this mattress is, having not slept in it yet, I also purchased a very expensive and beautiful down mattress topper along with very beautiful, thick, luxurious sheet set. Ultimately I ended up sending all that back because honestly sleeping on the mattress itself with no other bedding under me save a thin fitted sheet is unbelievably comfortable. You’ll want as little as possible between you and the mattress. I’m not sure what I can say that would be more complimentary than that. I’ve had the mattress for a few months now and it really has been life changing. Not in a ‘save the world’ kind of way - but it has saved my sleep. I sleep well, and for the first time in years. A good bed makes a good difference. I’ve been a tad evangelical about this review only because it’s made such a positive improvement in my life- and for far less money than the alternatives. A few tips: Put your mattress on a VERY firm surface. This isn’t your old traditional mattress, you do not want it on a bed springs. If you can’t buy a platform bed now, put it on the floor. Do not add a bed topper even though your experience with your old mattress may incline you otherwise. Sleep as close to the mattress as you can. No topper, thin sheets. If you don’t believe you can buy a great mattress for hundreds less, buy the more expensive ones first (I did). There is no risk in comparison. Those other brands let you send it back within 90 days at no cost. Buy it, send it back, then buy the Zinus and compare. You can also easily send this back. I’d be absolutely shocked if anyone says they went with the more expensive brand after a comparison. I’m glad you spent the time to read this review. Now, do your research, compare, and buy this mattress.
Review: Here is my way to long of a review - Highly Recommended! Bit of background here. I am like the other guy who wrote the review, 6'3 256 lbs and my lady is a tiny size 0. We had a coil bed for the longest of time that has been a pain in the butt. I have issues so its up front. I have back and knee injuries from my military service so I tend to get back and knee pains often. This also mean I toss an turn quite a bit at night, get up to crack my back. My bed prior to this one was a $1400 King size coil.pillow top mattress. I could sleep in maybe 3 positions that I would have to frequently rotate all night. This was the norm for me. So here is the review of new King size mattress: 1. Unwrapping: This thing was heavy, approx 125lbs. Size wise it was vacuumed sealed and places in white duffle bag. (mind you its in a box when shipped, skipped that part) This bag helped hold this bed in as it looked as if one sharp object would lead to this thing exploding. It comes with instructions are are very easy to read as will as diagrams to help those that need a visual aid. Moved the white bag onto my box spring and cut the white bag slowly. You need to be gentle here, Its holding the foam bed within so you don't want to cut deep or fast. Once its free it leaves the mattress still vacuum sealed within a thin, clear wrap. This allows you to lay the bed out and move it into place while still manageable. Once completed you cut into the clear wrap and start removing it. FYI - once you've cut into it it begins expanding fast. So be diligent about getting the wrapper off. It expanded to full dimension in maybe 1-3 minutes and was firm to the touch. 2. Observations of other users and mine: a. Smell: few of the others who have reviewed this mattress said there was a Chemical Smell. To me there was no chemical smell. If anything there is just a new bed smell and even that is barely even noticeable. b. Size Cut: few other have complained about the size cut of their bed, being that it was not cut at the same dimensions as a traditional mattress (smaller). I was a little worried before ordering however the mattress was actually perfectly sized as a king 12 Inches thick. LWH were prefect, sheets are super tensed on the bed. c. Drop spots or uneven mattress: few complaints about this effect however I inspected the mattress and it was perfect. No ball or drop spots at all. I might say some people are new to the foam bed and mistake the form fit for flaws in the mattress. 3. Settling in phase: I cut the bed open early in the morning, around 730 AM or so. Technically your suppose to wait 48 hours for it to expand properly so don't follow this if you want to maintain the limited warranty. So I admit I only waited till about 1030 PM to use it. When I un-bagged the mattress I cranked the AC in the bedroom leaving it sitting on the bed with nothing covering it. Heard this worked to expedite the forming process. Made the bed and it was ready for use. 4. 1st night of sleep: The first thing you notice is your butt sinking into place when your using this bed. It grabs it and locks it in place. It almost feels uncomfortable at first however after a minute or two when the foam around your other body parts forms. At this point it feel like heaven. Allow me to explain this further, With a coil mattress that are hard pressure points when you sleep. Side sleepers its the hips, shoulders, arm and knees. These case aches in the night that make you adjust, flip throughout the night. The first night I notices that pressure points were the biggest change for myself as well as my lady. The bodies weight is distributed more effectively to the entire body instead of this pressure points. I was able to get a much more restful night of sleep. I did not get out of bed to stretch out my back, my constant rotating positions was greatly reduced, and I had felt great the entire next day. Full nights rest, something I had not had in a very long time. 5. Over a week of Sleep: Like bullet 4, I've been sleeping like a rock at this point. The pressure point issues are gone, I wake ready to rumble in the mornings and it lasts all day. I'm getting a good sleep at night despite my back and knee injuries. And to that point my back and knee bother me far less in the day as well. I would almost call the bed therapeutic. Musing (a period of reflection or thought): There have been reviews that the mattress collapses after a year or two and they recommend against it. I thought about it and I strongly disagree with their review. My rationale is simple here. I have a King size bed which by nature of the size I always find my self spending 1/3 to 1/2 more money than Queen owners on anything bed related. Price you pay for luxury if a big bed. I digress. Rationale is that my last king coil pillow top cost $1400+ and started causing me problems about a year of ownership despite following proper rotation. Doing the math if the bed starts dying after 1.5 years as other reviews have complained about, I could just buy another one of these beds and still be cheaper then what I owned before. To be be exact here for a moment I could buy 3.6 of these foam beds for what I paid for my coil. Of which the coil got me though 1.5 years as well however at the same price point the foams will get me though 5.5 years worse case (per the complaints). With that said there are equally many other reviews stating the opposite that the bed last a few years. Also, you have to look at the price scale of beds, coil and foam. This bed is on the Extremely cheap side of the scale and its a steal. So here we are, at the end of my review. I recommend this bed 100%. Its far cheaper for my size bed (king), and the only reason there should be for complaints is if there were manufacture flaws. I had no flaws so I'm happy.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: is 8 inches to thick**
A: Too thick for what? I think this is actually one of the thinner memory foam mattresses (6" is about as thin as I've seen). There is a 2-3 inch layer of memory foam on the top, the rest is a good quality high density regular old-fashioned foam. If you go thicker, in most instances you're not getting more memory foam, you're getting more of the foam under the memory foam (except for those pricey ones that try to razzle-dazzle you with all manner of proprietary foam layers). You really just have to decide a couple of things:1. Will your sheets fit an 8" mattress?2. Will the bed end up about the right height for sitting on (we all do... to take off shoes, etc etc)We bought the twin XL for my mothers hospital bed. Her old mattress was 6" and she was bottoming out on it. This one she says is unbelievably comfortable. She loves it!It's a good mattress... I don't think you'll be sorry. And the price is killer!

**Q: To those who have owned this mattress for over a year, are there problems with "body impressions" or dents where one normally sleeps?**
A: There are HORRIBLE problems with this mattress and Zinus Customer Support. I have owned this mattress for 4 years and it is no longer usable. I weigh around 160 lbs and the body impressions and sagging are horrible. Even though Zinus claims a 10 year warranty they will NOT honor it. Their customer service is terrible. Every time you provide them the information they requested they come back for more. Over and over they do this.

**Q: How important is it to wait for 48 hours? Shortly after removing the plastic, it seems to be expanding nicely.**
A: These mattresses typically take 48-72 hours to fully decompress, but they can take up to one week to fully decompress in some cases. You can sleep on the mattress during this time, sleeping on the mattress will not slow down the decompression process.

**Q: can u sleep sleep on memory foam without the regular mattress under it**
A: Yes, a memory foam mattress does not require a box spring or a mattress to support it. The mattress itself is fully sustainable on its own. For the first few months I had it on the floor and then bought a platform bed frame to put it on. It was a very cost effective move to purchase this mattress. Hopes this helps :-)

I don’t typically write reviews for things I like, or don’t like. This bed is on the Extremely cheap side of the scale and its a steal. So here we are, at the end of my review. I recommend this bed 100%. Its far cheaper for my size bed (king), and the only reason there should be for complaints is if there were manufacture flaws. I had no flaws so I'm happy.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Awesome mattress for those on a budget!
*by K***E on August 25, 2013*

I was definitely leery about buying a mattress online. I went to Sam's Club, Mattress Warehouse, Bedding Barn, yadda yadda, and tried a million different mattresses. All of them were lovely, but none of them were cheap. Is this bed stellar? I wouldn't call it that. But it is a wonderful bed for someone who really doesn't want to spend much more than 200$ on a mattress, and someone who certainly doesn't want to try to haul a huge ass mattress on the top of her little Ford Fiesta. PROS - 1. Cheap. 2. Cheap. 3. Cheap. Seriously, where the hell else are you gonna get a decent mattress for this price? 4. It comes to your house in a box. You open the box, open a bunch of bags, and the mattress gloriously unfolds for you. After having moved sofas and tables and desks and lamps into my apartment, it was MAGICAL to have something normally so bulky arrive and take pretty much zero work to set up. 5. It's a good mattress. I've had it for almost a month now, I sleep well, there's no noticeable comfort issues. Many of the negative reviews I read mentioned that it was too firm, firmer than they were expecting. I think that's because when people think memory foam, they think Temperpedic. See the con section below for more on that, but given all of the complaints about the firmness I was pleasantly surprised with the softness of it. It's firmer than I like, but it does kind of contour to your body. Also, unlike Temperpedic, this mattress doesn't trap all of your body heat! I hate waking up sweaty so this was a huge plus. CONS - 1. Smallest con ever: it smells funny for like, 10 minutes after you get it. Really not a big deal though. 2. Do not expect this mattress to be a Temperpedic. If you've done any research on mattresses, you'll know that cheaper memory foam mattresses use a cheaper, different density foam than the fancy ass Temperpedics. (If you haven't done research yet, I suggest the Sleep Like the Dead website.) The skinny on these mattresses is that they run firm. And yes, this bed is firmer than I prefer. But see the PRO section above for why this doesn't matter to me that much. 3. Now I don't know this first hand, but I have heard that there's really not much you can expect in the way of customer service from this company. And honestly, if you order a bed-in-a-box like this, open it and find out 2 weeks later you really don't like it, what are you going to do? You can't ship it back, because there's no way you can squeeze the mattress back into the box. So I'd suggest trying out a bunch of mattresses, making sure that you're okay with something like this, I would say softer than a firm pillowtop, but firmer than a high density memory foam mattress like Temperpedic. Be REALLY sure you want to buy this before you place an order. ALL IN ALL - This is a good, budget mattress. Generally speaking with mattresses you get what you pay for, but I would say this is a really good deal.
