An Entertaining Minecraft-Like RPGish Game Appropriate for the Whole Family
Let's start with the obvious. Yes, it's a bit like Minecraft. The truth is that most games are derivative in some way from a previous one. For example, platform games are all derived in some way from Donkey Kong, most RPGs are somewhat derived from Adventure (and honestly from Dungeons & Dragons in some way), and most first-person shooters have elements of Maze to them. That does not take away from the entertainment value of the game, so it does not bother me.Although the game has many elements of Minecraft (survival mode), it also has somewhat of an RPG storyline that is appropriate for kids and anyone else that wants to play it. There is a bad guy to defeat, and you go through portals to travel through the different levels to reach him. You get to customize a character, choose a fighting class according to your preferred playing style, and it will move up in levels and upgrade accordingly. You need to mine for resources in order to create items. You fight all sorts of creatures attempting to block your progress. You can play in groups of 2 people offline and up to 4 people online. In a way, it also reminds me of a VERY simplified, Minecraft version of World of Warcraft. The bottom line to any game is whether it entertains its intended audience. I have watched two kids playing the game (ages 7 and 8, both avid video game players with plenty of playing experience in a variety of games such as Minecraft, the Mario franchise, Skylanders, and others, including occasionally attempting to play on their respective parents' WoW accounts). They both loved it. The game was challenging enough that they did not finish it in one day (an issue for the 8 year old), but not so challenging it led to crying bouts of frustration (an issue for the 7 year old). In fact, the children were playing together and actually collaborating to get some things done without too much arguing (a common problem). In other words, they were entertained. Success! Will the game continue to capture their attention months from now, as Minecraft has? How long will it take them to play through it? I have no idea. The truth is, only time will tell. It would have a better chance of standing the test of time if the game developers add content over time. If the game is successful, the more likely scenario will be that they will create some follow-up version, such as Portal Knights 2. Will all video game players like it? That is subjective. Not everyone likes the same thing. However, I have seen enough of the game to say that it is worth a try.

Underrated
This is a solid game, it is underrated in my opinion. Its a cross between modern Zelda and say Minecraft. I would take it over Minecraft any day. I bought it mostly for my son and glad I did. He really likes it. The only real knock I have on the game is it does not give you destination points like say Skyrim/Witcher/Assassins Creed. So he gets stuck at 10 years old, figuring out how to get materials needed for crafting, what needs to be upgraded to craft needed item, what items are needed to create other items, where to go to finish some quests. In this aspect it causes getting stuck issues, especially for a 10 year old. The game is rated for 10 and above and the content is fine for a 10 year old. Its just as I said, the adult games I listed above do a better job laying out what you need to do to advance your character and give you way points to get things accomplished better then this game. If they did better in this area I would give the game 5 stars.

Good deal
Item is as described. Arrived on time. Brand new, unopened packaging. This is a Christmas gift for my grandson and I hope he likes it. I will try to update my review after he gets it and I find out what he thinks. Thank you.

Disappointing
Was hoping this game was truly as entertaining as both Zelda and Minecraft together as advertised, however. It was quickly tossed aside for either game separately.

Did not work.
I would give it zero stars if I could. Disk did not work after countless effort. Total waste of money.

Fun, smart and popular
Definitely the most popular xbox game in our house. My 11 years old boy and his friend can't get enough of it.My 6 years old boy and 9.5 years girl love it too.

Great co op
This is an amazing game in the era of ever fading couch co ops. Great gameplay, and plenty to do as you progress through the story, item crafting. Different take on minecraft with sharper graphics, only let down is the horrendous amount of bugs and glitches that crash game on you at random.

Zelda + Minecraft = Portal Knights
I am not a gamer, but rather a mother and elementary teacher in her mid thirties, and I love this game. Somebody mentioned that if Zelda and Minecraft had a baby, this would be it and well...I have never played Zelda or Minecraft, but my kids do and they couldn't agree more. We don't play Halo or any of the other first person shooter games in our household (much to the dismay of my husband) but this game is a nice alternative for us.We mostly play it multiplayer, either dad teaming up with one of the kids (he's a ranger, the kids are all warriors) or me (I am a mage). It's really fun playing it together as it teaches children to communicate and also compromise (you take the heart, let's go here,...).Love:- Characters: you decide whether you want to be a Warrior, Ranger, or Mage - they all come with different strengths. I am a mage and LOVE working on my altar to make spells, wands, etc. but my kids love being warriors. The real strength appears when you combine the characters and play together.- Graphics: it's super cute and cool at the same time. There is lots of room to be unique, and I can see this be a great outlet for non-conforming youth. It's not heavily gendered and my kids absolutely love that they can pick and choose.- Variety: Worlds come with different "enemies" such as parrots, mummies, slime, etc. and you find different resources in them;Could do without:- The glitches :( we have to go back to title screen a lot during two-player mode bc one of us freezes or it says online system failure.- Red portals - not sure where to get the red portal shards for the red portal(s).- Only 2 multiplayers - unless you play online, only two can play at the same time on one XBox. I wish they'd make it like Minecraft where 4 can play at a time.Overall, the game is extremely fun and even younger kids can play it. It's one of those games that the whole family can play where you laugh and cry together :)
