What are the benefits of the thunderbolt cable & when exactly do you get 10 gb/s speed? Please provide an example.

You will basically get the same speed out of this drive whether using a Thunderbolt, USB-C or USB 3.0 connection. Thunderbolt does theoretically have a higher "top speed" than other connections, however the drive itself is the limiting factor here. There is a 2.5" spinning laptop drive inside, and it only moves data so fast regardless of connection. If you had a large multi-drive desktop RAID array connected via Thunderbolt, then you could get a really fast transfer rate because the drives can provide the data faster. If you have an older Mac with Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2, you can use those connections, otherwise the USB-C and USB 3.0 will work just as well (cables included for both).

can you replace the drive with ssd

Yes, you can. The new Samsung EVO's and QVO's work great in them. But when you take the hard drive out, it voids the LaCie warranty.

Does it work with c ports of a hp zbook g3

If your laptop has a USB-C port, this drive will work. Comes formatted for Mac, so will just need a quick and simple Windows formatting before using.

I want it for travel to back up all my photos and videos and not just rely on my sd cards.When you insert the card to download does it erase the card?

You need a laptop to transfer images to this drive. There is no way to insert an SD card. You hook it up to a computer via usb or thunderbolt cable and then copy and/or move files using the computer as the interface. If you’re looking for something that will allow copying without a computer, you need a different type of device.
