Review: A Great Continuation from the First Book! - After I heard about the movie, A Dog's Purpose coming out, I was excited to read the book the movie is based on. I tore through A Dog's Purpose because I loved the stories, full of love, loyalty, and some sadness. As soon as I finished the first book, I eagerly dove into the second book in the series because I wanted to keep reading. I usually don't read the next book in the series right away since I like to prolong my enjoyment but I couldn't resist with this book! A Dog's Journey is the second book in the A Dog's Purpose series and it continues right where A Dog's Purpose leaves off. I wouldn't say A Dog's Purpose ends in a cliffhanger necessarily but I could tell there was more to the story. A Dog's Journey starts out with a dog named Buddy and we see how his spirit appears in a few other dogs. Each dog is unique in his or her own way but the dog continues to build on his or her experiences from past lives to become the wonderful, lovable dog appearing in each life. Some of the same people from A Dog's Purpose are present in this book as well and this book teaches animal lovers of all kinds how much our animals love us and take care of us, just like we do for them. I loved A Dog's Journey just as much as A Dog's Purpose! It carries the same style of storytelling where the dog is the first-person narrator and it's fun to see how a dog describes the lives of humans. We don't own a dog but we have a cat and I whole-heartedly agree with the dog's views on cats and their attitudes! It's comical at times, sad here and there, but overall, full of love. I had two dogs when I was younger and these books help remind me of the time I got to spend with them. A Dog's Journey was very enjoyable and, if you liked A Dog's Purpose, I definitely recommend reading this one as well. You'll want to read them in order to get the most out of the books so start with A Dog's Purpose. I highly recommend this series!

Cute, funny, heartwarming, and surprisingly serious
My 11-year-old son, who usually hates reading, is really enjoying this book. He read the first one, A Dog’s Purpose, and we watched the movie together. He loves books about animals, and this one is cute, funny, and heartwarming, with moments of seriousness that make it even more meaningful. Told from a dog’s perspective, the author does a fantastic job keeping the story engaging and heartfelt.

Good, but somewhat of a letdown from its predecessor
Despite the fact that my tear ducts got quite a workout, I absolutely loved W. Bruce Cameron's A Dog's Journey, the sequel to A Dog's Purpose. The first book was fresh and unique in its way of allowing a dog (well, technically, a series of reincarnated dogs) to tell a heart-warming story of a dog's love and dedication to his humans. A Dog's Journey attempts to carry on that story; but in adhereing too closely to the format established by the first book, Journey loses it's ability to surprise readers. As the story of the dog progresses, were are again treated to tales of multiple reincarnations. The major difference is that in Purpose, some of those lives didn't involve the boy Ethan. In Journey, all the dog's lives revolve around Clarity, the granddaughter of Ethan's widow, Hannah. After saving Clarity from a fall into the pond, the dog believes Ethan would want him to stick around an protect the girl. If Buddy/Molly/Max/Toby can chose whose dog he'll be in the next life, why didn't he do so in the first book? That struck me as a major inconsistency. The aspect of Journey that bothered me the most, however, were the irritating characters of Clarity and her mother, Gloria. Geez, if I had been their dog I would have ran off and hoped I had better luck in the reincarnation lottery the next time around. Gloria is an utterly unredeemable narcissist while Clarity, or CJ as she comes to be known, is a troubled teen with an eating disorder who rejects the nice guy who secretly loves her for the abusive, manipulative bad boy. Yes, I know these things happen out in the real world, but the problems of these two characters read more like a script for an after-school special. Perhaps the problem I had with all this dysfunction is that it was presented through a dog's-eye view ... and that dog did not have the benefit of a degree in human psychology. As a result, we got more melodrama than drama and my tear ducts got much less of a workout this time around. Lest I sound like a complete dog-kicking curmudgeon, I did enjoy the story of Buddy/Molly/Max/Toby's lives with Clarity even if it lacked the power of the first book. I've never cared much for small, yappy dogs, but Max, a mix of Chihuahua and Yorkie, had me cheering for him. His short stature was more than made up for by his outsized attitude and personality. A book that makes me actually care about a dog like Max has a lot going for it.

Reasonable second book, but read the first one before this one
Seems a reasonable second book, but like movies, this one didn't quite match up to the first one. Still, I like the author and the way he writes. It was worth the price.

Outstanding Book for All Humans
A Dog's Journey is the sequel of A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron. This book is truly amazing ,and I loved every page and chapter. The story starts with Buddy a good dog, an old dog from A Dog's Purpose. Buddy thought his purpose in life was completed by loving and caring for Ethan. Ethan was his human in A Dog's Purpose but he died. Buddy soon realized he was able to love and care for more than one human when he meets Clarity June (C.J.) Ethan's granddaughter. C. J. was left unattended by her mother, Gloria, a miserable, selfish person and gets into a lot of trouble. Buddy sees her needing help and knows Ethan would want him to watch over her. Buddy is reborn several times throughout the book and comes back as male/female dogs meeting many people and having many purposes. His main journey back each time is to locate C. J. because he feels she really needs him. This book reflects many thoughts through a dog's mind, and is a wonderful book for ALL dog lovers, non-dog lovers, and ALL HUMANS. This book left me smiling, laughing, and shedding many tears, but when I was done I had the true feeling of how a dog, or any pet may feel. They love humans unconditionally, and are sincerely loyal wonderful "fur babies."

Mr. Cameron has done it again.
I remember a time when publishers didn't want 'dog' stories because the market had been saturated, so they said. That was many years ago. Slowly, in recent years it began to open up again and the hungry audience obviously made their desires clear because now there are many, many books about dogs (fiction as well as non-fiction) out there and I think I speak for many when I say we, the public, are thrilled. Merle's Door, The Art of Racing In The Rain, A Dog's Purpose -- these modern classics fulfill the love of such books I had as a child. They're just as good - maybe better since we now understand Dog better and allow our imaginations to speak more eloquently and poignantly in our interpretations of their characters and actions. A Dog's Journey is an easy addition to this list. It gives a voice to our feelings and those of our canine companions. It makes sense while making us chuckle if not outright laugh. And yes, it makes us cry -- because that is what we do with dogs. We love them, learn from them, lean on them and then grieve for them. I've had people listen sympathetically to how 'good' the book is but, when they're urged to read it, they shake their head sadly, pulling away from the emotion they KNOW the book is going to induce in them. I say that's like not bringing that puppy, that dog, that rescue, that best friend into your life in the first place: the good and happy times far outweighs the sad inevitability of their short lives. What you remember with your dogs is what a good dog they were. And the same goes for this book. This good, good book.

really loved! After that I needed a little more
Read this a few days after finishing A Dog's Purpose, which I really, really loved! After that I needed a little more. I want to say I enjoyed A Dog's Purpose more than this one because it's like the first time you go to a particular restaurant or make a new recipe and it turns out great! Yet the next time you make that same recipe again it's kinda meh, doesn't seem all that special after the first time. I guess it was like that. I dunno. This is, just like ADP, a great book for dog lovers and even others. I so enjoyed hearing the stories in both books from a dog's perspective. It was heartwarming, funny, and sad at times. Good read and I would definitely recommend this, but do read A Dog's Purpose first as this is the sequel to ADP. I plan to read more of Bruce Cameron's books, but right now reading some from people's perspectives. :)

Imperdible

Delightful look at life through a dog's eyes
Beautiful sequel to "A Dogs Purpise". This made me laugh and made me cry. I didn't want it to end. If you're an animal lover and especially a dog lover you must read this book. A great summer read or light reading when you want to escape into a delightful world through the eyes of a dog. Loved it!!! Hope he writes another book soon.

Another generous helping
If you have just finished reading A Dog's Purpose you are hardly likely to resist catching up on more of the same. It would be best to read the pair in order. W. Bruce Cameron has a magic touch, he can keep the `cliffhanger' stories going while continuing to surprise and inform. His careful research pays off by providing different arenas for our furry four-legged friend to excel in. Each life contains elements that carry on to the next, lessons to be learned, affections, ties and needs to be remembered, duty to be done. These all culminate in the most touching and useful of lives as a hospice dog, where shown in these very special chapters is the spiritual growth, sympathy, understanding and sheer loving joy that an animal can be capable of channelling. I read this all very quickly; I was so enthralled. It is a roller coaster ride through emotions, and of course any warm-blooded human will weep a little. However the book does leave you with another, better way of looking at life and death, no wonder it is so well received and universally enjoyed. A small point is that my hardback copy appeared to be produced on fairly porous, inexpensive paper with some pages quite faintly printed. So I think it would be an excellent kindle read, listened to on audio tape or in paperback, if easily obtainable, although the soft sweet face of the beagle on the front cover is worth the price!
