NEW Review: I don't just like this series - I don't just like this series, I LOVE IT. And that is a FIRST for me. When a person can say that they LOVE not just like 20 EPISODES PLUS the Pilot movie in a series that is saying something. And what made this series for its time so GREAT was 1 the right actors were cast in this series (you won't believe who were ALMOST cast in the Mac and Sally roles BEFORE Rock Hudson and Susan Saint James) 2 The series had FANTASTIC behind the scenes script writers and 3 the guest actors that did this series were wonderful and well chosen. This series was just GREAT for its time. And the fact that Rock Hudson chose to do this series in the format that Mcmillan & Wife was shown in as part of the N.B.C. mystery movie wheel was a PLUS for Rock Hudson along with being paired with Susan Saint James which was an added extra bonus for him and us the audience. Review: but I already know I'll like them. I bought them because - Haven't yet watched my copies yet, but I already know I'll like them. I bought them because, believe it or not, I woke up one day and had a desire to see the series. As I don't believe our library has its own copy, I decided to see how much it would cost to buy them for myself. The price, as they say, was right, so I bought it. My mother was the one who, as with Westerns, got me started on this series. Actually, she got me started on Rock Hudson through Doris Day movies. As a kid, I knew every Doris Day movie so well, I could recite them verbatim. So I decided to try watching Rock Hudson with another actress. The chemistry between Hudson and Susan St. James is good--not quite Day-Hudson, but then she wasn't trying to cash in on that Sixties success story. The two, together, in this genre work well. I like their give-and-take. Mildred the housekeeper (Nancy Walker)adds to the chemistry the way Alma the maid (from Pillow Talk) added to that show. All in all, a good series.

Definitely worth the price!
First, this is a review of the 24 Disc set. Since Amazon doesn't separate the different set version reviews together, this needs to be said. Second, the 24 disc set is WORTH THE PRICE. What you get is each season individually, along with a bonus disc. The set I got had two of the show's episodes on a separate disc as a double feature set. This disc includes 'Downshift To Danger' and 'The Game of Survival'. Other sets have had bonus episodes of The Snoop Sisters instead. Either way, the bonuses are worth getting the series the way a Complete Series Set should be: Each disc on it's own spot (not stacked like other shows have). Each season set has an episode description that includes who directed the episode, who wrote it, and when it first aired. For many of the episodes, they also list well-known guest stars. In addition to all of this, the discs are also seperated by how a person wants to play them: either one episode at a time or 'Play All' episodes on the disc. If you choose one episode at a time, you can ALSO choose where to start it as they allow for section selection. So, if something happens and you have to stop the disc, you can choose to pick up play again in an episode at a part that's closer to where you stopped before instead of having to start at the beginning and/or fast-forwarding to that spot. All of this made purchasing this particular version of the Complete Series set completely worth the price. For fans of the show, this is the one to get. With all of this information

A Great Series
From 1971 to 1977 there was a series called NBC Mystery Movie that aired once a week. There were 3 separate shows that made up the NBC Mystery Movie... McMillan & Wife, McCloud, and Columbo. They would rotate them each week. One week they'd have an episode of McMillan & Wife, the next week it would be McCloud, then the next week would be Columbo, and so on. Each episode was about an hour and a half, so they were more like mini-movies. I loved all 3 of the different shows and watched the Mystery Movie every week. We already have the entire boxed set of all the Columbo episodes & subsequent movies. Now I have the McMillan & Wife set. I can't wait for someone to produce a DVD boxed set of the McCloud series. They were all great shows. I definitely recommend them.

"It's no Columbo, but it's Good Fun..."
As a kid I was exposed to the 70s' mystery theater and I love a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Truth-be-told, I didn't have much or any exposure to McMillan & Wife as a youngster. Susan Saint James is pretty hot and my type so its a bummer I didn't come across this much as a kid. My childhood was more about Columbo, McCloud, Cannon and Barnaby Jones but I'm a fan of almost the whole genre. Columbo is king of course and McCloud is on the bottom but the others are worth watching. I never saw Mannix as a kid but that one is a beaut and right up there with Columbo in production quality, story lines, talent and visual appeal. The very early episodes in this set had a little bit of color and graininess issues but that is short-lived and then the series visual and sound quality is just fine for a 70s' production. I was a film major in college so I'm a pretty solid judge of acceptable visual and auditory quality. All these series are formulaic TV but I'd much rather watch old skool formulaic TV vs. new skool formulaic TV. When Sally departs the show it does lose a tad of its luster but Mack's sweet bachelor pad, the revolving door of ladies and the addition of more comedy (ex. 6'5" Mac is forced into small vehicles for an entire episode) pretty much makes up for it. One episode has 80% or more of a script from a Columbo episode. I'm not sure which came first, the chicken or the egg, but it was probably Columbo. It was kind of interesting seeing this modified version of that Columbo episode. All in all, this is a good set and since the price dropped on a special on this, Cannon, Barnaby and Mannix I had to get all of them.

I have fond memories of watching this show, way back when. Great chemistry between the two lead characters. Love many of the storylines.

A delightful, short-lived,American TV series from the heyday of such crime shows- the 70's. 2 aged, meddling sisters get involved in solving crime. I was pleased to obtain a region 2, complete set of these well-remembered, harmless shows. Mild, humorous, well-acted, well-paced, retro and enjoyable. Highly recommended.
