This thing was absolute garbage.
I paid extra to get what I thought would be a quality bit of kit and I got a kinda flimsy poorly assembled product. Forget searching for "stanley knife". This is like buying a "hoover" brand hoover, other companies have long since eclipsed them. Search for a "folding utility knife" instead. Does the same job, far more robust.PROS:- Ehhh none tbh.CONS:- Build quality was poor. This knife does not feel well made. It rattles a bit.- As others have noted, tightening the dial makes it so the knife can no longer retract or makes it very difficult to do so.- Fitting a new blade is not a smooth process.Overall... go and look at "folding utility knife". I ended up buying the Rolson one but im pretty sure all of them would be better than the Stanley fatmax.

Solid - Sturdy - Best
Some things are vital to pretty much any job and a decent knife is one of them and of course the Stanley knife is best known of all. And for good reason. A simple tool that works. This in my opinion is the best of all these knives. Not only does it use the easily available disposable blade this tool will last practically forever due to robust design and construction. This is different from the original type of knife as it has been changed into a more ergonomic design making it easier to hold and exert pressure when needed without undue strain on your wrist.Overall, this is without a doubt the very best disposable blade knife available.

Long and strong Stanley knife
After many years of service my old Stanley Knife needed replacing. With so many new brands on the market the hunt was on. I tried a few different brands but once again came back to a Stanley. The Fatmax version is a large solid knife and for me having a metal body is a must for stability and safety. The ability to retract the blade is very important, I've seen too many accidents on site with fixed blades on chippie pouches. You also receive a pack of original Stanley blades with this one, these are kept in place within the body by a magnet. There is nothing worse than opening the knife to change blade and they all fall out.Good product for trades and DIY users.

RECALL IMMEDIATELY 2 major faults and 1 dangerous fault
As you can see by the pictures, this knife can be dangerous. The internal magnet is too weak to hold a knife blade and the casting of the knife is 8mm out of wack which together means you can have a knife blade sticking out and cut yourself, which I have done and needed to apply first aid because of.Also when the knife is secured together it isn't possible to use the retractable blade mechanism. Therefore to use the knife it must be unsecured.Summary:Weak internal blade storagePoor build quality and part accuracyFaulty blade retraction. This knife should never have passed final product design review. Or someone in quality control is needing to be thoroughly retrained or replaced.Stanley and by extension Black and Decker need to immediately recall this product!

Best Stanley Knife I've Ever Owned
I don't know why I've never invested in one of the more elaborate Stanley Knives, I've always owned (the cheapest) and most bog standard Stanley Knife available. This one is a lot bigger than any I've ever owned before and this is a good thing - it feels more sturdy and comfortable to hold. The best feature is how it opens to put a new blade in, it was always a real pain to have to find a screwdriver then faff about undoing the knife. This one is sprung and is locked together with magnets and the brass cog you see in the photo... so you just turn the cog and it slides apart as a one piece!Inside the knife is a pack of 10 Fat Max blades within a nice plastic dispenser.Another good feature is the steel slider where a blade is inserted is also magnetic - making putting in a new blade easier.Definitely buy.

But it is made by ‘Stanley’!
I bought it because I needed a cardboard cutting knife urgently! My old one thrown away in household waste. I wanted a knife with a retractable blade and it had to be a ‘Stanley’..and with a’Stanley’ blade. When I opened the package my first impression was that I had received.. ‘The Boss’s’ Knife hand made to their special design in gold and gunmetal silver. OTT! The knife itself is good. The size long but does help my ‘palm’ grip and my arthritis.. and the ‘scissor’ action for opening and replacing blade does away with the need to find a screw driver. Would I buy it again?.NO but it should look good in my ‘trophy cabinet’!

Good knife spoiled by fiddly locking mechanism
When the blade is set up it works perfectly but the mechanism for retracting/extending the blade is just a disastrous design. It doesn't "just work" - you have to have everything (nut, blade, magnetic clip, spare blades) in perfect position or it just doesn't tighten or the blade just doesn't retract/extend. The designers need to go back to the drawing board and come up with a mechanism which allows fast and safe extension/retraction.

The bull-dog of utility knives
Absolutely fantastic. I put it through its paces when laying carpet tiles during which I only needed to change the blade twice (using both ends). It would score and cut with brilliantly.Solid construction, easy to handle; fits nicely in the hand. The new design of the handle swiveling to one side to release blades is brilliant. You get a pack of blades and one already in the unit. I purchased a spare set of blades as well.I use it for everything 'knife worthy' such as unpacking, cutting cardboard down, and more.
