"A 'must have' in the design arsenal."—Cat Normoyle, Professor of Graphic Design, East Carolina University "Provides enough thinking techniques to break out of even the worst creative rut."— Creative Woman's Circle Legendary designer Ellen Lupton demystifies the creative process in another essential graphic design book. Graphic Design Thinking explores a variety of techniques to stimulate fresh thinking to arrive at compelling and viable solutions. Each approach is explained with a brief narrative text followed by a variety of visual demonstrations and case studies. Lupton's hands-on, close-up approach, made famous with Thinking with Type , makes the creative process accessible to anyone and removes the myth that creativity is an in-born talent. Presents a wide range of methods applicable to any brainstorming scenario. • Techniques are grouped around the three basic phases of the design process: defining the problem, inventing ideas, and creating form • From informal strategies that are ideal for quick, seat-of-the-pants thinking, to formal research methods • Learn to approach problems through focus groups, interviewing, brand mapping, and co-design Includes discussions with leading professional designers. Art Chantry, Ivan Chermayeff, Jessica Helfand, Steven Heller, Abbott Miller, Christoph Niemann, Paula Scher, and Martin Venezk reveal how they get ideas and overcome blocks to creativity. Graphic Design Thinking is directed at working designers, design students, and anyone who wants to apply inventive thought patterns to everyday creative challenges in the design process. Review: Great for Graphic Designers/ Designers in general - I have got half way through my book and I will say I'm very pleased with it. I think it has a lot of good information. It's not a hard read but you do need some background term knowledge in Graphic Design or Psychology I would say. Review: Just Excellent All Around - This is a great book - one that shows you how to arrive at quality ideas and design through thought and process. So many books just showcase great design, but this explains ideas and exercises for how to come up with the great ideas. Highly recommend.

Very cool little book.
Nice intro to design methods. I also like that they use examples and case studies from community organizations instead of the typical S&P500 Companies that hardly anyone can relate to.

Tasty snacks, no meal
As an experienced designer/design educator, I was happy to find some ideas here that I'd never heard before (or perhaps had forgotten). The book is a quick, easy read, making it an excellent way to get an overview of how designers think and work. Students especially will benefit from learning that there are many, many ways to approach any design challenge. The downside, of course, is that you don't learn much about anything specific. No in-depth discussion; even the case studies left me wanting more. Fortunately the author lists resources with many of the topics that will help you learn more. Think about the book as a "Taste of Design" festival: sample a lot of things, decide the ones you really like, and at another time, in another place, dig in for a full meal.

Good ideas
This is a great introductory text for new and student designers who wish to improve their design process through tried and tested creative techniques. I was a little disappointed with the very brief descriptions of process, and the lack of detail in case studies, but it is still worth a read at this price.
