Safety First!
After catching myself touching the power cord of my Scienscope microscope's light with my soldering iron... for the umptyseventh time 😱, I figured I had better switch to a low voltage one. Remember, the tip on most modern solder equipment is grounded and breaching the insulation on a power cord hot wire would not be an experience I'd care to repeat. (Yes, I've done it before.) The low voltage system has the additional advantage of being isolated from the power line. It's a two wire system, in other words. Actually, now that I think about it, I'd better double check that when I get to work tomorrow. I'll update if it's not isolated from the line, but seriously, dealing with that much heat to save a transformer seems a little unlikely. (Confirmed. It is isolated from the AC power line.)So this one in particular? Every bit as bright as the Scienscope branded light it replaces, actually quite a bit brighter but the one it's replacing is old and the plastic has frosted with age. It fits the same, and seems as sturdy. Time will tell, though. It's in a pretty harsh environment. One minor ding, and this could be just my unit, but the plug on the cable doesn't quite fit the socket on the light itself. It went in enough to work, but it's tight and not fully inserted. Not worth deducting a * by any means, just an observation. The power supply is nice and stable. The lights don't flicker with all the heating elements on my bench running, which is more than I can say for the bench lights. The dimming range is from fully dark to fully bright, and is an analog pot, so it doesn't step.Just remember, Safety First! Hot soldering irons and plugged in AC line cords don't mix. If an option, low voltage like this one is the way to go.
