. Review: Absolutely love this album! - I’d have to say this CD, for me, was more enjoyable than hearing the studio versions of the songs presented on this disc. I enjoyed Alice In Chains for years and really miss MTV’s ‘Golden Era’ with programs like ‘Unplugged’. I loved Unplugged because there were nuances in the music disguised by studio engineering and this album did not disappoint me at all. I think I’ve now listened to the acoustic versions more than the studio versions. Review: Coolio - Favorite album, CD works as intended

A beautiful record, in every way.
Blown away with this MoV release. I am someone who doesn’t mind paying extra to get the record I really want. I do my research, try and find information about which press sounds as close to the original as possible, and go from there. So when I read the best press of AiC Unplugged was a $30 MoV release, I was hesitant. In my experience, I’ve had MoV releases that are not that great and sound flat, and then there are the gems like this one. This copy of Unplugged sounds as good as my 2009 Bernie Grundman master of Nirvana Unplugged, and that’s one of the best live records I’ve ever heard pressed. MoV claims this press was cut with the “original masters.” A bit vague of a statement, but you can tell this is one they really tried to get close to the original source material and make a beautiful record. Full, warm, haunting sound. As close to being in the room with those guys as we will ever get. If you are a fan of AiC, Unplugged, or just iconic records that are pressed extremely well, don’t sleep on this one. The ONLY fault I can find, and that’s really hunting for one, is like others have pointed out skimping on the packaging. For something so well done I would love to see it in a gatefold. Other than that, 5/5 stars for sure. RIP Layne.

awesome, but maybe only to the diehard fan
This is a purely fantastic CD, and makes me wonder why Alice in Chains did not record other acoustic sets. They provide acoustic renditions (full band however, guitars, acoustic bass, drums) of both some fitting and predictable songs (Nutshell, Rooster) and some you wouldn't necessarily expect (Would, Down in a Hole). The end result is a 13 piece thing of beauty, alternating between dreary, delicate and delightful. If anything can be said against it, Unplugged might not appeal to the casual fan or radio listener. Its for the fans, but I feel its also an irresistable ablum that will grow on a person. Another thing worth mentioning (sadly) is that its pretty obvious singer Layne Staley was tripped out on heroin at the time. One of the side effects of heroin addiction is a temporary alteration in the pitch of voice, and its quite noticeable in the song set. Compared to studio recordings Staley's voice is higher and thinner. But he is still such a proficient singer that he pulls it off very well.
