In A Tour of C++, Third Edition, Bjarne Stroustrup provides an overview of ISO C++, C++20, that aims to give experienced programmers a clear understanding of what constitutes modern C++. Featuring carefully crafted examples and practical help in getting started, this revised and updated edition concisely covers most major language features and the major standard-library components needed for effective use. Stroustrup presents C++ features in the context of the programming styles they support, such as object-oriented and generic programming. His tour is remarkably comprehensive. Coverage begins with the basics, then ranges widely through more advanced topics, emphasizing newer language features. This edition covers many features that are new in C++20 as implemented by major C++ suppliers, including modules, concepts, coroutines, and ranges. It even introduces some library components in current use that are not scheduled for inclusion in the standard until C++23. This authoritative guide does not aim to teach you how to program (for that, see Stroustrup's Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++, Second Edition ), nor will it be the only resource you'll need for C++ mastery (for that, see Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language, Fourth Edition, and recommended online sources). If, however, you are a C or C++ programmer wanting greater familiarity with the current C++ language, or a programmer versed in another language wishing to gain an accurate picture of the nature and benefits of modern C++, you won't find a shorter or simpler introduction. Review: A Fine Programmer's Reference. Not for the Beginner. - This book is the best way to get the features of C++ without having to slog through a "hello world" and "what is a loop?" portion of so many language books. This is not for beginners to programming, nor is it for those who have grown up on a steady diet of Java or Python. This is a very articulate language, that is concise and general purpose, but it doesn't hold your hand. This book shows you the amazing features of C++, while not boring you with tedium. Well worth the purchase if you're a C programmer or C++ programmer who wants to see the new features in C++. Review: Fill in the Gaps - Nothing but solutions. No questions unanswered. No fluff. Straight to the point with a purpose for every point. This text is absent of long overly complex theory. Very quick read for an experienced programmer. Worthwhile for any intermediate C++ designer to invest in a copy of this book for skimming through to fill in the gaps. I own all three editions, and recommend the third edition as the solutions from the third edition include and extend the first two.

Great book for an update on C++; the right size, for the right audience
A bit disjointed, but straight to the point. On the one hand, this is how I wish more programming books were written: they assume the reader knows programming already and only needs to learn the topic at hand, rather than describing the universe from scratch before getting to its actual content. On the other hand, it jumps seemingly randomly between topics; sometimes with too much detail, sometimes with not enough; sometimes referencing things back and forth too much. As far as C++ books go, this is probably one of the best, and a mandatory read to keep up with modern C++ (even if it's aimed at C++20). I just wish it was more even.

great catch-up for old coder
I'd been coding in c++ for 2 decades until ~2005, then went full c#, now back to c++ so I needed an "upgrade". fortunatelly it's just like riding a bicycle. this book is great for *me*, clear about the new stuff but consise enough not to be boring.

An absolutely essential C++ text that could be made better
This is an absolutely essential text for anyone looking to achieve fluency in C++, and probably Stroustrup's most important. It succinctly goes over all the most important features that C++ offers, up through C++20, from the man most knowledgeable on the subject. As this really is an essential text, I hope that someone continues to write books just like this for upcoming standards like C++23 and beyond. That said, future versions could be improved. While Stroustrup is a very good writer, for a computer genius, he's not quite a *great* writer. From the perspective of someone fairly new to programming, Stroustrup sometimes writes examples that go over the head of the reader and aren't well explained, including concepts that haven't yet been introduced. Example code occasionally contains typos, which can be very confusing. Further, while the book touches on everything C++ *can* do, and how to do it, from a technical perspective, the reader is left wondering *why* someone might use such a feature. Including more brief, real-world examples of how these various concepts and features are used would be helpful in future versions.

Exactly what I needed to update my decades old knowledge of C++ !
This is one of the best programming language books I've read. Very well written, and very concise & dense. Very little "fluff" here. I'm coming back to C++ after a 27 year hiatus, and A Tour of C++ was exactly what I needed to modernize my knowledge of C++. Great coverage of both the language and the standard library. The physical quality of the book is also outstanding - very high quality paper that doesn't bleed through when highlighting/underlining.

The best intro or advanced book
Simply the best book for intro or advanced C++. A gem.

Too up to date
This is a great book and I have liked and learned quite a bit. One thing I did not like was the use of "import" is not supported yet by C++ yet it is featured and praised in the text. It's a little frustrating that mares an otherwise excellent work. The way the author teaches is clear and the layout/design supplements that teaching wonderfully.

Easy to read
This was very handy for refreshing myself into the new madness that is modern C++ I had not used C++ in over a decade, and this was a great way to learn the modern "improvements" the language has gotten over the last years. Sadly it does not make C++ any nicer of a language to use ;)

3rd editon of A Tour Of C++ reviewed as updated for C++ 20!
Very pleased that vector<bool> remains a feature. Ever so pleased that arrays of 256 nameless function objects are supported in part so that C interpreters are not required and that such an array of function pointers could be used to process text streams efficiently. This means that it can compete with Perl and other languages in respect of text processing. The highly expressive template language - which I find so impressive - sheweth an advanced language still in the process of ongoing progressive development. Hope ever that the C++ language doesn't end up with C++23 reforms as being in degenerating problems shifts a la C#. Great work by a truly great author.
