Fluidmaster 400AH High Performance Toilet Fill Valve

Oddly enough, I had the toilet fill valve go bad in ALL three of my toilets in about a 3-month period. The toilets weren't too old at only six years since the house was built, but nonetheless they needed replacements all around the same time. We picked this one up on Amazon as I had already bought one from another store and didn't realize that all three ere going to go out around the same time period. This price to this was comparable to other stores and with the convenience that I didn't have to go pick it up. Installation was a breeze. Turn off water, flush, and disconnect the water line. I did have to adjust the height slightly to make the fill hose align more correctly, but that's easily accomplished with this valve. I can't tell that filling is any faster than my old valve, but I will say it's much quieter! My old valves still worked, but were causing my toilet to run occasionally and also had a random "groan" occasionally. Now there's no running and they're all nice and quiet. Pro-tip: Make sure you don't also need a flapper to go along with the valve. I had one flapper that was pretty deformed and was causing the toilet to run. (The valve still needed to be replaced to fix the loud groans though). Overall, pretty happy with this buy. Super easy to install and solved my problem. Hopefully I can get another 6 years out of this before having to replace again.

This model is a definite improvement upon the classic Fluidmaster design. Though not overly noisy, it doesn't sound noticeably quieter than other fill valves. Where this valve really excels is the rapid refill time. Timing from when I pull the flush handle, it takes just 25 seconds until the valve shuts off. I didn't time my old Fluidmaster valve, but twice as fast would not be an exaggeration — it's the fastest refilling time I've ever seen on a regular 1.6 GPF tank-style toilet. (I suppose you could also say that makes it the quietest, because any noise lasts for such a short time.) IMPORTANT — Take the time to adjust the refill tube control slider. The idea is for the toilet bowl to reach its proper fill level at exactly the same time the tank is filled. If the toilet bowl fills before the tank fill valve shuts off you will waste water. With a bit of trial end error you'll find the perfect position for the slider. Fortunately, it won't take long to do this, because the tank refills so fast! I might even call it "perfect".

I wish it looked more fancy but it doesn't matter as it works great on my duo flush toilet! I ordered it for my very compact whitehouse toilet thinking, that since it works with "all toilets", it will fit in mine and be breeze to install...well I was just partially right. The installation is easy and effortless, problem was with the hight of the valve- it stocked up above toilet's tank rim. I could still close the lid on top of the tank, but the fact of elevation itself, was driving me mad. I almost wanted to return it when I realized that my other dual flush toilet (GlacierBay), has very deep tank with small flusher inside. So I swapped the fill valves and now both toilets work efficiently. I can't believe the price. Yes, the design of valve might seem very basic and outdated, but it delivers. I spent may be a week looking for a dual flush fill valve, and not only there is just handful numbers] of them available, but they are pretty expensive. I'm glad I took a gamble on this one. I have never done any sort of plumbing repair work ever. I opened this up, turned off the water to my toilet, dropped some towels behind the toilet, and got to work. It was super easy to install, the instructions are well written, and my toilet is quieter now. All around a perfect product. I have a few points that I'd like to make about the instructions. The instructions say that you'll need a sponge and some scissors. I never needed the scissors. To handle the remaining water in the tank, I used the towels. Equipment that I used that wasn't mentioned in the instructions: Vice Grips. They come in handy during this project. If the bolts on your toilet are too tight to twist off with your hands, you'll need something like vice grips to take those bolts on and off. Even if you aren't repairing a toilet, get yourself some vice grips anyway. They are useful around the house. A mirror. I used a mirror with a stand so that I can see the bottom of the toilet. I used my wife's vanity mirror. It worked great! (Don't tell her.) Anyway, I didn't time myself on this repair job, but it was easily less than an hour, and (mind you) I have no experience with this sort of thing.

I put off dealing with my running toilet for months because I assumed it would be a nightmare to fix. A plumber quoted me $180 just to show up. On a whim I ordered the Fluidmaster 400ARHR instead, watched a single YouTube video, and had it installed and working perfectly in under ten minutes. No plumbing experience whatsoever. The difference was immediate. The phantom flushing is completely gone, my tank fills faster than it ever did with the original valve, and it's whisper quiet — something I didn't even realize I was missing until now. My old valve would hiss and groan for a full minute after every flush. This one fills quickly and shuts off cleanly every single time. The build quality feels solid and the adjustable design made it easy to dial in the exact water level I wanted. Everything needed for installation was included in the box — no extra trips to the hardware store. For the price, this thing is an absolute steal. I've already recommended it to two neighbors who had the same issue and both had the same experience. If your toilet is running, stop overthinking it. This is the fix. Best $15 I've spent all year.

It was quite easy to install. However, I'd modify the documentation slightly regarding the "Shank Washer". It's a rubber washer which is so be placed inside the toilet at the bottom of the Fill Valve pipe. In order for the measurements referenced in the documentation regarding the recommended height of the Fill Valve to be correct, the Shank Washer should be installed first. Otherwise, the measurement will be about 1/4" too tall. There is no mention of the "Shank Washer" in the documentation, other than it exists. It wasn't very hard to figure out, but the measurements should be made after placing the washer on the pipe. Also, my first one, the float would occasionally stick for a minute or 2 during the refill, and eventually break free. To fix this, I flushed the toilet so the tank was empty, then manually slid the float up and down several times slightly torquing it to the side to help smooth the surfaces better. After doing this, the float would no longer stick.

After messing with a stuck float for a couple months ( I knew better), I bought this Fluidmaster PerforMax and in a short 30 min or less, a perfectly working toilet again. The item came in a couple days and installation was completed very quickly. The instructions are thorough and detailed - I suggest reading them first so you get the flow and tank level correct on the first try. I didn't have any re-do's. I have an old 3.5g tank and this works great in it, although it is actually designed for the new 1.6's. The tank fills in about 45 seconds, which is about the same as before. And best of all, NO TOOLS required LOL Although I'm not a plumber, from my experience stuck or poorly moving floats rarely can be fixed and it isn't worth the trouble for a mere 12 bucks or so and 30 min of time. Highly recommend.

The little blue hose clamp that goes on the fill tube is so tight that, even in its most released position it smashes the fill tube, restricting water flow. It eventually restricted the flow to the point that it was making a high pitched whistling sound every time the toilet filled, so I had to replace the tube and I threw the blue clamp in the garbage. Poor design.

There’s not much to be said here really. It is an universal replacement kit that is simple to instal with minimal tools and works as advertised once correctly set in place according to the rather well designed and easy to follow instructions. The last similar one I just replaced lasted 10 or 12 years... Good product, recommended.

I installed it inside a Mansfield toilet to replace its float fill-valve that was getting stuck. It got in easy, it did the job, the toilet appears to be shutting off now and is not leaking. The hardest part was getting the old fill valve out. The old fill valve managed to last ~20-25 years. I don't think this thing will last quite as long: it is more complex with more moving parts. I don't find it noisier than the one it replaced, but it is noticeably slower. Not a big deal for me, and in any case I am not getting it out of there until it breaks. Which is hopefully never.

Could not get the water level for toilet to work. It will not adjust at all. Everything else works well and very easy to install. Instructions are clear.

As a useless Millennial, I pride myself on trying to take on little DIY tasks in the house. This was pretty easy to figure out and comes with instructions. My toilet tank is tucked under a countertop which makes it more of a pain in the butt to replace this than it needed to be but that's not fault of the fluidmaster. Anyway, point is that if you're the type of person who will put a whole in the wall trying to remove a baseboard like I am, just know this is doable for you. If you're successful installing it, enjoy the unreasonable sense of self accomplishment.
