I purchased this sander specifically to sharpen knifes and metal cutting tools, just make sure to use the right sand paper. **Q: Is the motor loud when running with nothing being sanded? How would you compare it to a corded 3/8" drill?** A: It's not the quietest sander but if I had to rate the noise level on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the quietest and 10 being the loudest, I would give it an 8 with just the motor running. **Q: How powerful is it. Does it bog down when putting moderate pressure against the belt or disk. Also does it run true with little to no wobble?** A: 1) With moderate pressure, it does not bog down. With heavy pressure it slows a bit, but I have not found that to be problematic. However, so you know, I use it with 1/2 in wide belts, so there would be a bit more drag with 1 in belts. 2) There is no significant wobble. It runs true. 3) The only problem I found was a slightly uneven platen, but I was able to bend it back true. **Q: What material are the drive and idler wheels made of?** A: They are made of injection molded thermoplastic, not rubber. I'd guess ABS plastic, though not sure. They are well formed and the larger drive wheel has radial reinforcement webs. This 1x30 is very much like Delta used to make them 30 years ago. RIKON does have some hit and some miss now and then, but this belt sander is just very cool and well designed machine. The safety is there – you can ask 90 year old to sharpen lawn mover blade or 9 year old to sharpen a pencil on this thing. You can get 1x30 belts and 5” replacement disc in many grades real cheap and good quality as well. I would most definitely recommend this sander to anybody that need to sharpen knives, work on home projects or do any crafts or hobbies involving removal of access material from things.
