Is the extract version more potent than the regular Astragulus?

Yes, it is more potent, but more importantly it is standardized. That is, you know exactly what is contained within the capsule, 70%Polysaccharides. In the plain version you really don't know what you are getting. This herb was recommended by Dr. Weil.

the product appears to be ok. It's easy to swallow. I haven't been taking it long enough to confirm any positive effect.

Is the other 30% of the extract the saponins? If not what is it?

This is a water and ethanol extract of astragalus root that is dried into a powder without adding a carrier. The soluble constituents of the plant are extracted. At least 70% of these are polysaccharides. The rest is expected to be the full range of other soluble compounds found in astragalus root, which we do not separately identify or quantify, though to meet label claims we do I.D. the material to assure that it is astragalus and also assay it for polysaccharide content. According to one study (PMID 26916911) “The major components of Astragalus membranaceus are polysaccharides, flavonoids, and saponins.” That would be a logical basis for considering what the non-polysaccharide fractions in the extract likely would be.
