A great independent workbook
Unless your child's reading skills are significantly behind their math skills, they should be able to use this as an independent workbook to shore up their subtraction skills or even push themselves a little bit. The material is broken up along the obvious lines (two digit numbers, three digit numbers, with regrouping (which they call 'renaming') and without), and has both standard pages of a few dozen problems and more visually-oriented and context-based pages (pictures of rulers measuring items, etc). Each task has a succinct set of instructions that most 2nd graders should be able to read and comprehend. These Spectrum books are of reasonably good quality. While they don't have a spiral binding to lay flat, they're not so bulky that a child can't hold them open. The paper is thick enough to handle heavy-handed writing and multiple erasings (though i don't suggest using markers, they do bleed through a bit).

easy for kids to use
We have been using Spectrum books for our daughter since 1st grade. We used to buy some of these from the local Costco. The book is very well laid out, with plenty of space and readable fonts, easy for kids to use. The techniques are pretty much standard techniques that are taught in schools, and these books act as supplemental help, for parents who want to themselves work with their children and do the extra practice. There are number problems, word problems, visual problems and tables. This is not an "easy" book, it is meant to be worked on with your child with a tutor or adult as needed, to study and solve problems together. Pricing is also great on amazon, with prime free shipping.

perfectly good workbooks
We got ten of these workbooks: Addition K, Addition 1, Subtraction 1, Subtraction 2, Shapes K, Long Vowels 1, Short Vowels K, Numbers and Counting Pre-K, Counting Money 2, and Telling Time 1. They're pretty good workbooks. We have four kids from 1-8. The one and two levels (grades) fit the two middle girls well. There's lots of good practice on the subject at hand. They're color, but they are "serious" workbooks. There are no fun pictures or creative back stories to the worksheets. If you want more fun worksheets the Homework Helper series is very good for that. Each workbook has 72 pages of worksheets with the rest of the pages being the table of contents and the answers. For eight dollars each that's not bad. There are better "value" workbooks, but there are a a lot around this price. In the end, none of the workbooks stood out as amazing. But none of them stood out as duds either.

Speaking as a teacher of second grade...
It just so happens that I am a 2nd grade teacher currently attempting to teach subtraction concepts to my students. I just want to say that this happens to be a fantastic resource for anyone trying to give a kid a little extra practice. Strategy-wise, there is nothing fancy here, more and less the same strategies I try to cover in my classroom. Where this succeeds is in the extra practice with logical, clear guidance of said strategies. This is one I'm keeping around.
