Still heartbreaking but effective.
Sorry for the long life story before the review (skip to next paragraph if just wanting the review): As one who loves all animals (and has had mice as pets in her youth) but who has enough common sense to know that wild mice running freely in a home is a definite NO due to diseases they carry and the filth/mess they create if not in a caged, managed, cleaned (i.e. a pet friendly) environment, I knew I had to come up with some solution when I suddenly found a mouse in my basement after I had a new furnace installed. I tried humane traps, I tried deterrents of all kinds, I tried outdoor sprays, mothballs, peppermint essential oils and while I believe those "sort of" helped, it was not 100%. I KNOW I will NEVER use a glue trap (that is true torture for the creature!!!!) or poison as they may die outside and poison another critter if eaten or they may die between walls in the house and attract more critters. Finally a neighbor set some snap traps and my heart broke EVERY SINGLE TIME. While effective, it was awful. I could hear it, some looked like they were injured instead of instant and likely died slowly and then there was clean up. I just couldn't - so the neighbor had to keep coming back if someone was caught. Fast forward, the neighbor is no longer there, I've had a mouse free home for years (using preventative methods still, sprays, powders, peppermint oil, etc.) and have kept a couple snap traps refreshed and baited for a while. Suddenly I noticed peanut butter is missing on both traps but nothing triggered. Back to the internet, I see these electric traps. I watched and read review after review, watched YouTube on how to use and discard, read that it is still torture but it's quick and has less chance of causing a bad injury but not death, etc. and decided to give it a try. My stomach still turns and my heart hurts everytime I set it up and worse yet when I see the light flashing that someone is in there. But out of all my experiences in dealing with this, so far, this has been the best option for me in managing this. In a perfect world, they would all climb into a humane trap, get spayed/neutered and released in a happy mouse haven where they could live out their days in freedom. However, the reality is they can't live here. So finally the review: The trap is compact, neat and easy to understand. I put a small pea sized amount of peanut butter in the bait area with a toothpick and put the lid back on, installed batteries (4 AA), set the trap along a wall with the opening facing out, turned it on. The green light flashed to indicate it was ready. 2 days later....nothing. I went back and put a tiny, thin smear of peanut butter on the outside of the trap bait area and the next day the green light was flashing to indicate someone was in there. I turned off the trap and it certainly wasn't pleasant opening the top to find a dead mouse, but it was easier to drop it out into a bag, close the trap, and reset it after I re-smeared the outside a teensy bit. The next day, round 2 was caught. I don't have to touch the dead mouse, I don't have to look at it, and I haven't heard the trap "do it's job" like I did the snap traps. I have since set another one and see how this goes. I don't look forward to having to clean the trap but rather this than some of the other options. I appreciated the warnings that the trap should be placed in a clean, dry area away from anything flammable (laundry lint, chemicals, etc.) and that it is intended for indoor use only. I also liked the suggestion of uninstalling the batteries if concerned about getting an accidental shock during cleaning or removing the dead. If anything changes in my review, I'll update it but so far this seems to be the way to go for me - I wish I could find their entry point(s) and prevent all of this. :( RIP little mice. :'(

Absolutely the Best Mouse Trap I’ve Ever Used
The OWLTRA OW‑2 Indoor Electric Mouse Trap blew me away. I’ve tried snap traps, glue traps, and every “humane” gadget out there, and nothing has worked as consistently or cleanly as this. The setup took only a minute, and the design is smart—no mess, no guessing, no drama. When it activates, it does exactly what it promises, and the indicator light makes it easy to check at a glance. What I appreciate most is how safe and contained it feels. No exposed parts, no unpleasant cleanup, and no worrying about pets or kids getting into it. It’s compact, easy to empty, and resets instantly. Within the first 24 hours, it solved a problem I’d been dealing with for weeks. If you want something reliable, sanitary, and effective, this is the trap to get. OWLTRA nailed it. Highly recommended.

Works, clean and easy
I used a different version of this on our RV, worked well. We haven't seen a mouse in years, but one decided to take up residence a few days ago. I purchased two of this newer version of the trap. It worked well. They are safe, look okay and are exceptionally easy to install and to empty. They can easily be moved and are reusable... simply replace batteries when necessary. Previous version battery lasted for months. Don't know about this one yet. Safe for pets and children. Easy to install and empty. Absolutely works. I do recommend them.

Owltra vs Victor
I've used Victor electronic mouse & rat traps for over 10 yrs. They're VERY expensive, but definitely more humane & that's important. I've been frustrated w/ them because they stop working before even going thru 2 sets of batteries. Many of those traps never make past 1 set of batteries. All the cleaning & treating them as good as can be doesn't work! So I decided to try the 2-piece electronic Victor mouse traps since maybe if the part that holds the bait fails, it can be replaced cheaper than the entire trap & it would make cleaning easier too. But my orders have not been successful. I was sent the same old 1-piece traps instead, & when I tried to re-order the 2-piece traps, they just never came & I've been waiting since early Nov & over a month later still waiting for them to be shipped from Victor. So tried these Owltra mouse zappers in the meantime. Not only did they make it here in decent time, but they work so much better! So good in fact that I'm getting tired of seeing the green light flashing AGAIN & AGAIN. While waiting on the Victor's to come, the mice have been nesting & I have lots of baby mice getting caught now. Thanks a lot Victor for all the additional killing of little critters I now have to do because of your slow/non order fulfillment. The Owltra's just go & go & go! Even the bigger, fatter (pregnant) mice easily fit & go into Owltra traps, unlike the Victor mouse ones. In the past I had to use the Victor RAT size ones to allow for the pregnant & bigger mice to get in it (even more expensive & more dangerous for a pet paw to reach in & get shocked too). The owltra traps r made just right to put in a snack or cereal box to keep paws away from trap openings as well as easily slide into narrow places mice travel thru that the Victor is too wide to fit in. Another thing, the Owltra's are also 2-piece w/ the batteries/electronics in the top piece that removes so the bottom piece can be soaked in water to clean. The entire bottom part is open for easy cleaning & baiting. As for baiting, I've used 1/4" pieces of beef jerky for the strongest smell attractant w/o being wet & messy, I found that some goldfish flakes, dry dog or cat food nuggets, or bird food work best. Mice will come to these things w/o a hitch. Peanut butter, cheese, & crackers just don't work well to attract mice to traps & tend to mess up the electronics w/ moisture & smearing. But now I'm sold on the beef jerky bits! Best bait of all. Trust me, I've had over 10 yrs experience w/ Victor's electronic traps; bait matters! These Owltra's don't even need bait after the beef jerky has been used & that scent is in the trap along w/ the scent of previous mice being in the traps. The scents remain after the jerky is gone & keeps drawing more mice in to sniff around & u got 'em, no re-baiting even required! The scent of previous mice in a trap makes other mice consider it to be a safe mouse-friendly place to enter. So that matters too, & after the 1st catch, u have that scent in there which attracts more to enter. As for baby mice, it's not unusual to catch 2 @ a time because the Owltra trap design is much different from the more size restrictive Victor trap. The Owltra's cost less than the Victor alternative too. I'm an Owltra fan now! Good-bye Victor. I do have to say that the newer Victor mouse traps have much improved over the older ones tho! I'll give 'em that! But the Owltra's have outperformed Victor in real life usage for me in an old house in winter & in an area w/ large outdoor summer mice presence that come looking for a warm place to winter over in. Hope all this info helps someone. Please be humane tho!

The only trap that actually caught the mice!
This has been the best mouse trap. I would have loved to go with a catch and release product but indi believe with my schedule and timing, they would just die in the trap. I had tried multiple brands of the no show snap traps and i was catching none. These are easy to set up and i quickly became aware that my mouse problem was bigger than expected. I every time i reset the trap it would catch another one. Set up is simple. Disposal is simple (but you do see the mouse), no touching involved. I used a piece of dog food and a small bit of peanut butter as bait and it is still working. Easily more than 10 traps and still haven’t changed the batteries. No live or mutilated mice have been found in the traps either. Sorry for the long review, but this is the first trap that has reliably worked, well worth the investment. I feel safe using it around my cat and dog and outing it in my cabinets. Highly reccomend

Great product does what it's intended to do
I was "shocked" to find out how well these worked. Mice kept getting into my food stash at work and needed a solution. Set two of these up, put peanuts in the food tray and a week later, found the culprit. Clean up was super simple. Turn off power, pull off the top, toss the mouse in the trash, add new peanuts, pop top back on and turn power back on. Easy peasy. Thankfully I had the mindset to check after the weekend so there was zero mess or decay so cleaning wasnt needed other than just dumping in the trash and reuse the trap. Pros: simple set up, battery operated, compact, simple to check and clean. Cons: mine did not show a status light for when the trap was set off and caught a critter. Mine could just be defective but I recommend checking daily or weekly. Thus the 4 star. If my "trap activated" light would have came on, 5 stars for sure. I have no idea if the red light will come on when the battery is low since it worked so efficiently and potentially before the batteries could get low. Overall, great product and did the trick.

The end to my frustration
We heard noises in a partition wall of our kitchen the weekend after Thanksgiving. I ignored it for a couple of days until I actually saw the mouse. I called our pest control company - no results (quite frustrating). I bought about 3 different kinds of glue traps - no results. There is actually one kind of glue trap sold on Amazon that I placed to only watch the mouse crawl over it like a bridge. I bought 3 different kinds of snap traps - no results. I bought the spin traps - no result. I tried the old ¨bucket trick¨ - no results. At this point I am about 3 weeks into the frustrating situation of having a mouse in my house with a concerned wife, a 3 year-old, and a newborn. I finally got my son to leave the traps alone, but explaining why they were there just concerned him. I finally came across the Owltra electric traps. Humane, reusable, effective - at this point I've filtered through many products and I've heard it all. I am about $200 into a never-ending battle - why not try Owltra? The product is well made but is low profile. I was able to fit it behind a couch that seemed to be the mouses favorite tunnel (even through no glue trap or snap trap in that location had produced results). A week goes by and I am still frustrated. I happened to glance over behind the couch and I finally saw the green light! No mess, no agonizing mouse, no problem. These traps might be reusable, but I just took the batteries out and tossed the whole thing into the garbage can outside. These traps aren't exactly cheap, but I was not willing to clean up after a dead mouse and reuse the trap. The mouse was actually larger than expected and this trap still got the job done. A week went by and my wife wakes me up last night. She heard scratching in the wall when she went to the kitchen for a mid-night drink of water. Great! Here we go again. I had left the second of the two Owltra traps in place behind the couch. I figured it could just live behind the couch. I went and walked the kitchen after my wife woke up and heard nothing. Went to lay back down with the thought of having to deal with another rodent in my house with small children. I woke up about an hour ago to do my morning computer work before my children wake up. I came out to my living room and saw the green light of success flashing nice and bright before I could turn the lights on. Now I'm not excited that I have had 2 mice in my house in the last month when I had only had a mouse in my house one other time in the last 8 years, but I am quite excited about this product. I do not typically write reviews, but this product has worked great. It is not the cheapest solution, but I believe it is money well spent.

They work!
It was the middle of the night when we heard the telltale signs of a mouse in our room. Crackle here, scurry there, crinkle over there…a shadow sliding down a computer cable…the shuffling of papers on the desk. We have a mouse. It’s the dead of winter so catch and release would’ve just been cruel…we have pest control and they set up traps baited with poison that apparently weren’t doing anything…I wanted a humane option and didn’t want them going off to die somewhere in our room or closet, so this seemed like the best bet. I placed the order that night and by the next evening we had these locked and loaded. Maybe it was our choice of bait because night one using beef jerky and a piece of milk bone did nothing. For night two, we dumped the traps and set them with crumbs from ultimate peanut butter monster cookies from Costco. I woke up late that night and was sitting on the edge of the couch when I heard a very quiet but obviously electric buzzing sound…then nothing. I looked over and saw the flashing green light and within a few minutes the smell of singed flesh filled my nose. Bingo. I curled up and went back to sleep, satisfied. I woke up hours later just before sunup and to my surprise, heard that same sound, followed by a sudden flashing green light. Crap…there’s two…I’m hoping there aren’t more but we’ll be keeping these traps in place to be sure. All it takes is 4 AA batteries, a little bait, and the flip of a switch and you’re good to go. A little more expensive than other traps but they’re humane, easy to set and clean, sturdy, durable, and most importantly, they catch mice!

What batteries?
"The OWLTRA Electric Mouse Trap requires batteries to operate, but the specific battery type isn't detailed in the product information." Come on, guys. It's not rocket science.

Save time & money, just buy these already
You're reading this because you have a mouse (you probably have way more than you know) and you're looking at traps but you're not a monster so don't want to get a mechanical kill trap that could just maim them or a sticky trap that leads to a slow painful death. You might be deciding between these, which seem more expensive, or cheaper catch-and-release traps. Let me save you some time and money ... If you get a catch and release trap you have to let the mouse go somewhere and you might think the garden is fine. If it's freezing cold it could just mean a slower painful death because it doesn't have a home but more likely the mouse will be back in your house, shed, or garage before you are. Seriously, you need to release them 1-2 miles away for them not to come back. Yes, MILES! Do you have the time or inclination to be taking mice for day trips out to the countryside? Of course not. They also need a lot more cleaning because mice make a mess while waiting for you to come and check on the trap. Trust me, you'll get tired of them very quickly because they are ineffective and the money you spent on them will be wasted, so you'll be back here anyway. These are super-effective and give a guaranteed quick death, and they are much easier to empty and clean. With a couple of these you'll be through your mouse issue in way less time and will also be able to leave them down as a preventative measure without the need to keep checking on them multiple times a day as you would with a live-trap (without feeling bad if you find a skeleton of Mickey in a months time). It works out cheaper to just buy these from the start and they are much easier to use.
