Five On A Treasure Island: Book 1 (Famous Five)

Let’s get one thing straight—Five on a Treasure Island is a timeless gem. Enid Blyton’s storytelling still captures imaginations like few others can. Secret maps, mysterious islands, hidden treasure… what more could any young (or young-at-heart) reader want? Now, full disclosure: the book I received didn’t match the cover shown on the website. It was a third-party edition, a bit more plain and not quite the nostalgic vibe I expected. BUT—once you crack it open, none of that matters. The story is just as gripping, the gang just as charming, and Timmy the dog still steals the show. So while the cover may not have looked like the one from my childhood memories, the adventure inside was every bit as brilliant. A great read for kids and a lovely trip down memory lane for adults. Just don’t judge this book by its cover.

Bought as a request from my 8 year old grandchild. He loves these books . I remember the lovely feeling of reading famous 5 bigs when I was a child.

good read

This book is so hard to review as an adult reading it back! I have such great memories of reading this book as a child, the Famous Five were my favourite books along with the Magic Faraway Tree series. I was set a challenge to read a book with the main theme being children, and I instantly knew I wanted to read back on something from my childhood. My first annoyance with the Kindle version that I read, was that rather than the 160 to 260 pages the book was listed to have across various searches - it only had 77 pages! Frustrating when you are trying to read as many pages as possible in a month... All of the illustrations had been removed - again, frustrating - because I am sure I remember there being maps. And I like to look at maps when reading, having a neurodivergent brain I am terrible with my imagination and a map really helps with visualisation. It feels strange to read back the oldy-worldy language from decades ago, how children used to speak to each other and how 12 year olds were allowed to go off in boats and explore islands - so different from how things are today. But it was lovely to get caught up in a time where things were so different. If I choose to read this rest of the series I will be buying physical copies, so I do not have the kindle issues again. At least this way I can share them with my granddaughter and hopefully give her a love for the same stories that I too enjoyed so much as a child.

It is the mark of a great story that can stand the test of time. I absolutely adored The Famous Five stories when I was young and I'm thrilled to say that nothing has changed upon reading these classic stories again many years later. This particular paperback edition of Five on a Treasure Island marks the 70th Anniversary and supports the House of Illustration with five of the Famous Five novels earning a cover-art makeover. The cover illustration has been done by Quentin Blake, known for his Roald Dahl illustrations, and the artwork looks superb. While the tale itself is simplistic and the language is a little old-fashioned it is still a charming and captivating story that brings back feelings of nostalgia whilst reading. It is the first in The Famous Five series and follows Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog on their adventures. It is a story worth having in your collection and this edition looks fantastic - I really hope that future generations will appreciate these timeless stories.

A great start to the Famous Five series. Perfect book for a young grandchild

Five On A Treasure Island: Book 1 is a delightful children's adventure story by Enid Blyton. The story is set in the carefree idyllic days of another era when children were free to have adventures. Really good exciting story set around an island, a ship wreck, gold, two bad men, four children and a dog.

All the Famous Five stories are great and my 8yo granddaughter is as enthralled by them as I was over 60 years ago. They play to children's fantasies now as much as they did then. It has helped my granddaughter's reading a great deal as they are such interesting stories and she cannot wait to find out what happens - putting herself in the story as it goes along. They might not be in the same genre as current authors by Enid Blyton had the knack of knowing just what children of that age wanted, and still do want.

Very good , fast story , easy to read and intresting

This was a gift for a little girl who's just beginning to read. I read this series myself as a child and I'm excited to know I'm starting her off on a series of adventures with a group of children she'll be able to relate to. Great book for children! It arrived in good condition but took a long time to get to me.

Je cherchais quelque chose à lire pour asseoir mon tout nouveau niveau intermédiaire en anglais et The famous five est parfait. Il fait parti de ces vieux livres ou faire rêver les enfants et leur faire vivre des aventures n'était pas encore trop niais, ce qui est donc très bien pour les adultes en apprentissage de la langue. Je comprends ce que je lis et les mots que je ne connais pas sont compréhensifs par le contexte. Je ne l'ai pas encore fini mais je m'y sens bien. Et je pense que je prendrai la suite car c'est une série ! :)
