We have a free-standing wood burning stove in our home and pretty much use it exclusively for heating the house. Before trying Fat Wood we used to use just about everything you could think of to start the fire. Some items worked ok but most would burn out before the wood would catch on fire. I'd have to try 2 or 3 times before the firewood would finally catch fire. My wife could almost never get a fire going so I was delegated to be the one and only designated fire starter. I used to have a good source for seasoned cedar to split into kindling wood and that was my favorite go to for starting the stove. But my source dried up and I haven't had any cedar in a couple of years. I had seen Fat Wood kindling in Wal-Mart a few times but for some reason (stupidity?!) I never bought any. It just seemed too expensive for the amount of kindling wood in the package.Well, I finally picked up some of the Fat Wood and gave it a try. I was amazed at how easily it ignited and how consistently it would start a fire in the wood stove. The stuff ignites so easily that my wife now starts the fires most of the time. I don't think I will ever use any other fire starter products in our stove.And as far as the concerns about costs, I've found that I'm actually saving money with the Fat Wood because I'm using much less of it than the other starters I was using. The stuff that I would have to use 2 or 3 times to start one fire.

Love that for lighting any fire. in the wood stove, the campground, the big green egg or whatever it does the job every time and never gives the food an off flavor or so. Bets fire starter ever

Makes starting a fire from a cold start faster than crumpling balls of paper. Best price I could find. I will make it through the season and have fatwood left over.Updated Jan 4,2024We have 3 high efficiency fireplaces. Even down to frigid single digit temps, we will run one or two of them to heat the whole 5000 sq. ft. house in lieu of running the oil fired furnace. I've experimented with Rutland Gel Firestarter, Natural Fatwood sticks and Rutland Firestarter squares.The Rutland gel is the poorest, least economical of the three fire starters. After lighting it with a small portable torch, it doesn't burn hot enough to get the kindling going and often gets used up before the kindling catches.The blue flame made me think of the alcohol we would set on fire in chem class. You could pass your hand through the gentle blue flame. I checked the ingredients on the label. Sure enough, "denatured alcohol blend." You're going to use a lot of the gel, slathering the kindling so even at a low flame temperature it burns long enough to get things going. Not economical at at all.Fatwood sticks were the next better performer. Three or more fatwood sticks strategically placed in the kindling wood and lit with the torch gets things going in less time, A better choice.The best performer was Rutland 50B Safe Lite Fire Starter Squares, 144 Squares. After stacking a cold fireplace with kindling and split logs, I just slip ONE 1 1/2" square under the kindling at the right front corner of the kindling and another square on the left front. The Rutland squares are compact, burn hot enough and long enough so kindling and logs are aflame in short order.
