Will this work on well water?

It will work on any type of water. Well, city, salt. If it has nitrates in it this checker will see them. Only complaint is it doesn’t come with a lot of reagent packs and they are hard to come by currently. But it is absolutely a great investment for accuracy and peace of mind.

Can I add some marine salt to my freshwater sample to make this work for freshwater?

Go on to Reef2reef discussion boards and direct your question to Randy Holmes Farley he's the chemist. He usually gets back to you fairly quickly. My honest answer though, you'd be better off with Tetra strips. They're plenty accurate enough for fresh water applications and cheap enough.
