A ton of value, a ton of fun.
First off, this game probably isn't for casual gamers. The learning curve is rather steep, having both an overall resource management game encompassing the brilliant turned based squad tactical missions. But, if you invest a little time and get the hang of it, you'll be amazed by the depth this game can offer. The game is challenging, even on its rookie level, and it's easy to invest a ton of time strategically building up your global alien resistance force. Its one of those games that you just need to do 'one more thing' and the next thing you know it's 3 in the morning and you got work in the morning. The strategic depth of it is something I just can't stress enough. I found myself thinking of strategies and tactics throughout the day, and couldn't wait to put them to the test. It's amazing how the overall metagame is so engrossing as you are pulled in many different directions, but that all fades away when you send a squad out on a mission. At that point, you are only worried about is completing the mission, and getting your soldiers home safely. As the game progresses, you become more and more attached to the soldiers that do your grunt work, and it's devastating when one gets seriously injured, or even killed. Customizing them, naming them, and carefully upgrading them is the meat of the game, and it's a blast. The rules and mechanics of the game are as close to a miniatures based tabletop skirmish game you can get without having to paint your own figures. Visually, the graphics are very good. Although, sometimes the camera is a bit wonky, and it's hard to see all the action (not that it really matters, as it's turned based, not real time) I wish you could zoom in a little closer to the battlefield at times, but I just love the look of the maps with the variety of forests, cities, slums, alien bases, trainyards, etc. etc. There are many prettier games, but rarely do you find one with such addicting game play. I finally just finished the campaign (only on rookie) and it still took me a couple of weeks of playing time (after work and on weekends). It was so fun, that I'm going to start a new campaign on veteran level tomorrow. Even though the campaign will roughly be the same, the game randomizes so much that it'll feel like a whole new challenge. After that, I'm probably going to download the DLC to extend it's life even further. I haven't tried multiplayer, but it looks like a blast. It allows PvP action with points based squads of aliens, humans, or a mix of both to face off on random maps. I play all kinds of games on my console, first person shooters, role playing type games, sports, racing, etc...but this game has captured all my attention like no game has in several years. I honestly wish there were more of this type of tactical skirmish turned based game, available in several different genres. Excellent replayablility, engrossing storyline, amazing tactical depth. A perfect mix for me.

I love the XCom series
I love the XCom series, and I had high hopes for this one. This one, however, has visual issues. I am playing on a hd 70 inch tv, and I can't read any of the words on the screen. After squinting for a few hours, I turned it off. I had other people watch to see if it was just me, but they had issues with the ship visuals and the words on the screen. I won't be able to play this game for hours in a row like the first game. I do like the gameplay though... It has a nice ratio of respect for the 1st game and enough new things to be very interesting. I would probably do a 4 star of visuals were fixed.

Major positives, minor negatives.
Great strategy game that builds off the first game and introduces improvement. The plot is more involved and the early stages of game-play are much more difficult. The addition of a turn counter on some missions adds an entertaining level of suspense. Some people have noted that load times can take a while. While they do take a few minutes to load missions, the wait time does not seem out of proportion with other games I've played. Just a heads-up: unlike any other game I play, I have had trouble with this game freezing and then restarting. When this happens I lose my progress and have to go back to the last save. It has not happened often, and it has not yet ruined anything major. If I used the auto-save feature, it would probably not affect anything.

Broke My Console
So, before you start reading, this game came in with European ratings. I didn't pay this much attention and went to install the game. Now, if you play on Xbox One, you know that you can normally play a game after it gets around twenty percent finished with the download. Me, being eager to play started it up. Almost instantly, the console began to bug out. First, I had problems starting games and apps. Then it progressed to the point where my Xbox wouldn't start anything. If I can get it working, I'll change my review. But until that point, it'll stay this way

My first XCOM experiance
Not a game I would have normally gravitated to coming from the world of first person shooters. However a friend highly recommended it, so I picked it up not really knowing what to expect, and I got to say Im addicted to this turn based strategy shooter. So much content to keep you busy for a long time. Very deep game, but the learning curve isnt too bad. Replay value is very high! No need for the cat like reflexes honed by shooters I normally play. But having a brain is a must.

Great game, if you like XCOM get this NOW
This is a great game. Its one of those that, I tell myself "Just one more mission" and three missions later I realize I forgot my task, then I say and "Just after this mission, I'll do that thing". Its a rarity I find a game that can get me so enamored with it. I played the original PS-One version and the XCOM: Enemy Unknown that came out a few years back. This is a polished, turn based strategy game that you never know how things are going to work out or what new enemies you will find along the way. I'm on my second play though and like every other XCOM I've played, I've always did super bad on the first go around, but then succeed well on the second. There are many more enemies to contend with, a welcome change of pace and it really keeps you on your toes. So why only 4 stars? There are a few caveats, one is with the game's tutorial. It seems like that when I find a new enemy, I have to figure out what its strengths and weaknesses are, even though my 2nd in command or my chief scientist tells me "Oh yeah we seen those before". You would think that there would be a Dossier on the enemy that I can review as soon as I meet it, so I'm not spending time and resources experimenting with the new target. Only when my subordinates say "OH CRAP THATS NEW" should I be concerned with discovery. Oddly enough since this is a continuation with the XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within that somehow we have lost technical knowledge on decent weapons and armor? I would say let the 'best' of the first XCOM be the 'base' of XCOM 2 and grow from there. One last thing is a few game mechanics. Sometimes the dice roll is just plain wrong. I've had several times where I'm point blank with a minigun only to do no damage to target. I'm sorry, that target should be kibbles and bits. I find myself having to back up to set out a flurry with the minigun. The Viper is also broken. It has a tongue that can go through an entire building and snatch wary soldiers. I've seen this tongue go 8 to 10 tiles (at 3x3 that means 24 to 30 foot). There is nothing in XCOMs reality that can accomplish this with any precision and break through windows and pull a soldier through. Especially given the fact the snake is maybe 10 feet long stretched out. I'm sorry, that attack should only be 3 to 4 tiles MAX and only open line of sight. Not through two windows on opposite sides of a building. They are bad enough spitting poison on everyone. The funny part is, they are usually pulling the soldier into unknown areas and this will trigger events. So while the soldier is getting crushed, he or she is calmly reporting "Hey I see some bad guys over here" and "I got eyes on our target".

It's OK
I really loved the original game, and bought this one when the price had dropped enough. Pros: Nice graphics, same good elements of turn-based and strategic play, same good customization of soldiers. Cons: Interface is significantly more complex and harder to use than in the original. The mild tongue-in-cheek humor of the original is missing. Many of the themes of the original were dark and gloomy, like a horror movie, while the themes of the new one are brightly lit and colorful. My main complaint is the setting, in that it does not draw me in as the first game did. It begins with the Earth having lost the war to the aliens, which contradicts the ending of the first game. The aliens have been in control of Earth for 20 years, yet seem unable to stop me from flying a gigantic ship around wherever I want. In the original game, you dug tunnels to expand your underground base, which seemed reasonable, but in this one, I have to shovel the garbage out of the alien ship to make room, and have my highly-trained engineers help with the shoveling. It just does not create the kind of compelling atmosphere that makes me want to fight through the interface.

XCOM Enemy Within on steroids! GREAT game!
Oh yeah, XCOM Enemy Within on steroids! I love the changes they've made and it's visually great on my new TV. If you're into using a console I would recommend PC, but mine isn't beefy enough for it. This game is pretty difficult, even on easy but it auto saves quite a bit in all the right places in case you need to restart. Definitely recommend! Especially if you liked Enemy Within.

Estrategia pura

Amazing game!
Amazing game, should be a option to start a new game+ so you can keep your characters. Never played the series before but I have been hooked on this non-stop. It's quite hard but you soon start to learn the mechanics and it becomes a very enjoyable and rewarding game!

Xbox tactical miniatures game.
I love the Xcom series of PC games refreshing change from the normal shooter type games. More like a miniatures game. Rather tactical. I never get bored redoing missions and trying new tactics. Very recommended
