I have an older, pilot-light gas log set from DESA. My remote control that operated the logs broke and is no longer available. New, vent-free log sets are upwards of $1200, so I was bummed. Then, I found this Durablow unit. The positive reviews seemed too good to be true...I could get Alexa to turn on my fireplace? Seemed unlikely without a degree from MIT and a working knowledge of some arcane programming language. I purchased the Durablow unit that also has a temperature control capability, figuring it would be nice to set the temp and let the unit maintain the room temperature (vent-free fireplaces really can heat up a room), The box came, and installed in under five minutes using a pair of pliers to remove the old wires and place the new ones on. The directions were very clear for the hookup, and the software on the phone app worked right away. I did have a minor problem getting Alexa to recognize the Durablow software, and solved it by installing and enabling the "skill" for the fireplace control. Once the skill was enabled, the software worked flawlessly. No kidding, I feel like a minor god when I command my Alexa to "turn on the fireplace!" It works every time! Better yet, the thermostat is also controlled by Alexa without having to do anything more than ask her to "Set fireplace to 71 degrees." It works brilliantly! I know we are not supposed to fall in love with inanimate objects, but I think I love my new Durablow controller.....

After wiring in the controller, it worked immediately. The wiring required some modification of the connectors. My fireplace and the old controller (which died) were wired together using a crimp wire nut. The wire nuts are the white connectors in the image. I cut the wires on the old controller leaving about 3 inches at the wire nut. I crimped 0.25" wide male quick connects (blue) to the old wires. I could have connected the blue quick connects to the connectors that came with the new controller, but I did not like the bare connections hanging in space. I could have wrapped it in electrical tape, but it would not look pretty. I decided to cut off the connectors and replace them with simple female quick connects (pink). This was simple for me because I had the wire cutters, wire strippers, quick connect crimper tool and quick connects in my stock. If you are not accustomed to using quick connects, this will be a difficult process, but you might be able to install the controller without the wiring change. Look at the wiring on your fireplace to estimate what is required. My criticism is the short (1 meter) power cable. I need a 2 meter cable to reach the outlet. The outlet is on the left side of the fireplace while the remote has to reside on the right side. A 1 meter cable is absurdly optimistic even if the outlet were on the right side. A pair of cheap 2 meter micro USB cables can be found on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098DW7485/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A21XRSAEC1W48L&th=1
