YES! This works! Taping boxes doesn't have to be so hit and miss.
OOhhhhhhhh so THIS is how a proper tape dispenser thingamajig should work....... I have a few others, the itty bitty meant as disposable sort that comes with the tape, a handled one that LOOKS like this dispenser but let me tell you is NOT like this dispenser... It's weird cause the differences are so subtle I actually started getting buyer's remorse before it even arrived here. I mean, 25.00 bucks for a tape dispenser, I don't even spend that kind of moolah on..well..anything really...short of food or some sneakers... BUT the Amazon reviewers who pointed me in this direction with their reviews are sooooo right. THIS works. I actually taped boxes that were getting shipped out today more than they needed just to experience the little pleasure of a tape dispenser that works. Turns out that having to lift up a pair of scissors and cut the tape from the dispenser awkwardly making a mess is NOT necessary...aieeeee. Turns out I DON'T need to be doing as much tape buffering by hand after sticking it...cause that rubbery roller bit on this unit, ACTUALLY presses the tape down very securely. I think it's because the roller is a dense, rubbery material, it just does a gopod job. My old dispenser had a hard plastic roller, cardboard while smooth-ish does have the corrugated insides that create a micro texture to the box, I think the rubber presses into that better creating a better seal.. I am still getting the hang of this, I pack a lot of packages but am by no means an expert and am constantly refining my techniques...but I think this is really worth it. As others have said the blades are sharp..cause duh, they're blades, my old tape dispenser (the one that needed scissors to assist the tape cutting) looks like a dull, little toothy wannabee compared to this little tape hacking beast. I actually looked at the blades side by side and the blade on this new dispenser has a nice long tooth, VERY sharp. Also it feels like stronger metal than the old dispenser's blade. Perhaps a blade upgrade could have helped my old one..hmm..maybe...dunno. I have this one now. The old one won't be thrown away. I'll keep it as a back-up or take the handle off and use it as a masking tape dispenser by clamping it to my desk. We don't have kids or pets that are in danger of runaway tape dispensers here so the lack of a blade cover is no concern to me. I just..I can't stress enough, this works... Before purchasing it actually watched youtube videos of people taping cartons with tape dispenser gun thingamajigs just to double check I was doing it right cause it never felt right with the dispenser I had...it was too much work. Honestly there were days, plenty of days the little cheapy non-handled tape dispenser that comes free with tape did a better job than my old handled dispenser, that's just wrong. Glad I found this. I'll do a long term usage update down the road a ways, see how long the blade stays sharp etc.

We Use it Regularly and Love It
I've been using tape guns fairly regularly for about twenty years now. I've tried a large number of tape guns. For the past five years in particular it seemed like tape gun after tape gun that we tried was just horrendous. My boyfriend had me convinced that this was just the way things were. Finally, in a fit of frustration, I ordered us this one. I figured, if nothing else, it couldn't be any worse than the one we'd been using (or the many before). Wow, what a difference! There are just so many ways that this tape gun far outshines any of the myriad of others we'd tried. The tape rolls smoothly. The tape cuts off evenly and easily! It works exactly like a tape gun should. It was just so amazing. I sang the praises of it every day as I packed up things to send off on ebay and Amazon. I wondered why I let myself get tortured for so many years, when this one existed. We've been using it for over four months now and it's holding up like a champ. I'm not a commercial shipping factory, so it's not getting constant use every minute. But it does get used pretty much every day. It works like a charm. It's fairly light. It's easy to load and unload. But really, it's that ease of use that just is wonderful. Before, doing the box wrapping was a painful chore that I dreaded. Now, zip-zip-zip, it's done. I wish every product was like this - that they did what they were supposed to do, the way they were supposed to do it. If I eventually have issues with it, certainly I'll come back and update the review. I waited the full four months before posting my review, to make sure it got through that initial settling-in period. Right now, I am quite content highly recommending it.

Brilliant
I package up a lot of boxes every month, but it took me a long time to find something that would make my life easier. When I looked at the different models, they all looked so heavy and clunky. I wanted something that would make packing up boxes easier - not harder. I settled on this product because its price was about right for my budget, and it had good reviews. After using it for only a few boxes, I was already won over. This product is great. It is not at all heavy or clunky to use - I can grip the handle quite comfortably and get my boxes taped up in about 1/4 of the time it used to take me. I was very surprised by how light it is - considering its size (it does look a little bulky) this is not at all as heavy as I feared it might be. It isn't so good for smaller boxes, because the overall size of this product makes it difficult to use when the box is a small size. But most of the boxes I pack are at least 10x10x10, and this product is just perfect for them. It is easy to load a new roll of tape when needed and the device holds the tape very securely and rolls the tape smoothly onto a box when you want to secure it. I never feel like the tape roll will come loose when I am using this product. The blade is very sharp - but I haven't cut myself on it once, nor do I worry about doing so. The only downside is that sometimes the edge of the tape can get a bit tangled up and can't be used. Overall: Great product. Definitely a good buy.

What the fancy red one is SUPPOSED to do
I've been packing boxes for my music store for over ten years. My first tape dispenser was pretty much like this one, and I was happy with it until I dropped it a broke the handle -- after 5-6 years of solid use. I then went to an electric version, which was great, but stopped working after a year. (I notice that they are no longer sold.) So, I bought the 'deluxe' Scotch one with the retractable cutting bar -- the 'red one.' It's a nice idea, but the retractable blade only cuts well at if held at a perfect angle. More often than not, the end result is either a messy cut, or dents in the box from pressing too hard. This is the old-school kind of tape dispenser, with a sharp blade that needs to be avoided when not being used for its intended purpose. It cuts the tape perfectly, every time. I've actually found I have to train myself to STOP using the strange motion that I learned to use the red dispenser! It's a simple tool, properly designed, period. Plus, it has replacement parts available. Face it: if you have young children around, the tape dispenser should be put out of harm's way. But the same can be said for kitchen knives, shaving razors, and box cutters -- none of which have an automatically retracting blade. Why? Because it just doesn't work that well. I'd give this thing five stars, except it doesn't have a rubberized handle, the one and only feature I liked about the red one.

Far superior tape gun, makes women and children cry in fear at the sight of it.
There really is a difference. I'd rather have one of these than 10 of those crappy ones (like the ones that come with "Duck Tape" brand tapes. These may look similar in photos, but there are some details that make it better, and worth the price (relative I guess.) My number one favorite thing about this model is the little metal bar than holds the tape to the roller. On most cheapy tape guns, that bar is placed flat side against the tape....and what happens? The tape sticks to it, making it difficult to get the tape started. All of them have this crappy feature for some reason. All of them except the real deal...this 3M tape gun. This H180 uses a similar piece of metal to hold the tape with one important distinction....it's placed on edge. This gives the tape very little to grab on and makes dispensing tape much easier. My second favorite thing about this tape gun is the razor-wire-like tape cutter. It's like this tape gun is saying "screw you world...you sue-happy bunch of ninnys! I'm going to be the most dangerous thing you encounter today!" In a world full of plastic wrap with cutters not worth a shiz, helmet-wearing kids walking to school, and warning labels on plastic bags, it's refreshing to see a really aggressive and SHARP cutter. It's so sharp they had to put a warning label above it (hey, it's still America.) Anyway...this thing is built like a truck (deuce and a half.) I wish I had bought one 10 years ago. I thought of getting the low-noise version (H150) but was concerned over the way it holds the roll of tape (looks funky.) And, I'm single with no sleeping kids so screw it...shriek all you want, tape. This one is tried and true anyway.

Far Superior
This dispenser is far superior than any other I’ve tried. It’s smooth, easy to operate, cuts well and I have no complaints. Spend the extra few bucks and buy this one, you won’t regret it.

Worth the money !
I looked thru all the choices from cheap to expensive, reviewed you tube best of etc. This is one of the most expensive but it's more comfortable to use and well made not just a bare metal frame with rivets and rollers. I added some " Red Fusion Grip Tape " used to wrap weight bars etc to make the handle more comfortable and gripable. I keep that tape on hand 36' rolls in black & red. You can buy it here on Amazon. It's very useful. For instance a Milwaukee M12 5 3/8" Circular Saw does not have a dust bag you can buy for it. I had 2 other Milwaukee saw dust bags. One wrap ( overlapped by half each rotation and walla, the dust bag fits airtight where before I had to duct tape it on. All those hard plastic uncomfortable bag or luggage handles, walla now theyre comfortable to grip and carry. This tape is on my short list of keep this stocked up at home

Alright, but a bit fiddly
I wasn’t completely sure if it came with tape or not – turns out it’s just the dispenser, so you’ll need to get the rolls separately. First time using one of these, so nothing to compare it to, but I found it a bit awkward. The end of the tape doesn’t stay in place, which makes it a bit of a faff. Gets the job done, though.
