Astro Tools 498K 0.498" Shank "THOR" Air Hammer/Riveter.

Thor hits like a champ, well not when I first received it, I didn’t want to return it or send it for the warranty repairs and not have a tool for a month or even a week, I needed to use it with in a couple of days of receiving it, I had some ball joints and wheel bearings I needed to bust out, so I emailed them and got a response next day, by the falling day and a couple of emails with a video I got a call from one of their technicians who walked me through it, it was a very simple repair, the hammer was assembled too tight I took it apart lubed it real good with some air tool oil reassembled it and it’s been working like a champ every time I used it, I have 3 air hammers now 1 very small assembled from 2 different air hammers hits fairly week but good for very tight spaces and once in a blue moon, my second one it my go to for all kinds of medium to heavy work including some tie rods but not all because those things can be really stuck, and now I have Thor, I’m yet to test it against a co-workers Snap on or any other tool truck air hammer including IR, with that said I have used it on every ball joint, wheel hub, tie rod rod end, bolts, nuts, I’ve only had it for a few months now but it’s been awesome, and loud, I can use other air hammers for a quick 123 hit with out ear plugs and not have any issues, but this guy is no joke I tried it once and stopped and find me some hearing protection. So far it’s been very much worth the price, it has paid for it self.

This gun is unbelievably powerful, almost to a fault. If there is any remote chance whatever you're pounding on will move, it will move it. If it cant be moved, it will mutilate and deform it. I cannot stress how much beef this air hammer has. The trigger is essentially an on off switch, there is absolutely no finesse to be found with this tool. However, I have mine hooked up to 1/2 line with a high flow fitting so that may be my own fault. I previously had it hooked up to smaller diameter line and the control was not much better. I bought it thinking that I would be able to replace my IR135MAX as a do it all air hammer but with more power. Unfortunately, its not suitable for everyday use as it's comparable to operating some sort of world war two heavy artillery. When you need power and want to move heaven and earth, this is the air hammer you should reach for. Pull the trigger and hang on, you will need to use both hands.

I am not one to write reviews very often, so hopefully this review makes for a good impression. So far I am thoroughly impressed with this air hammer. Previously I owned the standard barrel length Astro 4980. That air hammer kicks ass....puts SnapOn, Matco, IR, you name it, to shame. But then my 4980 stopped working....just blew out air without any impacting. Then I got this bad boy. And ohhhhh boy. I never thought I'd be so happy with an air hammer in my career as an auto technician. If you want something to move, this hammer will do it. And the greatest thing I've noticed so far compared to my last is this one actually has a decent degree of trigger control! The 4980 is either on or off, no in-between. This one has some feather control. But let's all be honest here, if you're looking at getting this bad boy, you probably already own a decent 401 shank hammer....for obvious reasons stick to that for general tasks. But if what you're working on requires a bit of ass, grab this guy, you too will be impressed. Today I pushed out two lower ball joints on a rusted out f150....each ball joint pushed out in less than 8 seconds. Previously last week I pushed out two press bearings....7 seconds for each of them. Wear your eye protection (squint guards wont work), and make sure you have some extra stock in 498 bits. I have not broken any yet but have heard this guy can break them. This is an early review since I have not owned this tool for very long. I will provide an update assuming anything changes.

Would use again

So for my first time I hade a brake rotor that would not come off no matter what I hit it with a sledgehammer with using pb blaster as well as heating the rotor up with a torch for a long time even the little holes in the rotor where you can thread in a m8 x1.25 bolt didn’t work the threads in the rotor just stripped out so I bought this skeptical that it would even work because I already beat on that rotor for an hour and when I used this it took about 2 seconds to break the rotor loose the air compressor I have is a 6 gallon 175 max psi compressor from harbor freight and I used a 3/8 hose and high flow connectors and it worked great

Im a little confused on this i was hoping it would bust through these wheel studs like nothing but I must have defective one hope astro can send me another one that works better

Just like the title says this thing is a monster but only for a couple hours of work before it's leaking air so bad it won't work. Loved the thing when it did work but I'm 2 for 2 on Astro air tools being junk after a handful of uses. Their air impact was also a beast but blew out the SECOND TIME I used it, the air hammer worked a bit longer but not much. I have multiple air tools and none have ever had a problem with my shop air besides the 2 Astros I have. Maybe the 3rd time would be the charm but I doubt if I ever give Astro another penny for their air tools.

My new favorite air chisel! (I have several) Got the quick change chuck and bits from AP at the same time. Hits hard, but is controllable, great for suspension and heavier items, definitely not a toy like those other ones!

This thing hits exactly as hard as advertised. Absolute animal. Feed it the air and let things come apart.
