would this work on any socket? or something special required

No they will not work on just any socket as matter a fact it will not work on most sockets I bought these bulbs but they never specified the base they were and unfortunately I have 4 of them and don't fit any of the 30 fixtures I been through,,,,

does this bulb go into a normal socket? ie: do you need a ballast light an HPS?

You will need a ballast, or bad things can happen. It's a Medium base bulb - the same as a regular light bulb. HOWEVER!!! You WILL need a ballast. An HPS is high pressure sodium, this is a Metal Halide. My advice, get the proper ballast for the lamp.
