Barely a game, but can be fun with the right crowd.
Is there a game in this box? Barely. We have themed game nights at my house, and many time the theme is a murder mystery/whodunit theme. I figured this game would be perfect for a filler between games. It certainly is a filler, but there is barely any game here. Here's how you play:Somebody murdered the old man. Who? Everybody evidently, but you have got to get rid of the evidence against you. How do you do this..... First players decide on which character to play. the jaded lover, the butler, the spoiled daughter, the business partner, etc. Each character has his/her own special advantage. Player one plays as the inspector this round, but his character card is still active. The inspector picks one of three investigation cards from his three card pile. Then , in order, he flips over a Motive, a Weapon, and a Opportunity card and hands them respectively to the next players. The Motive goes to one, the weapon goes to the next and so on. The players then, including the Inspector, flip over their accusation cards which will move the Opportunity/Weapon/Motive cards either to the left, right, across, or stay where they are. If your character card says that the evidence card does not effect your character you can toss the evidence away. Then the Inspector reveal which evidence actually stays in play and which evidence goes away since he wasn't really looking for that evidence. Once a player has one of all three types of evidence then the game is over.Thats the premise of the game. It sound like a fun premise, but the mechanics are super dull. The inspector has three choices of which evidence is going to stick, and many of those inspection cards have ALL THREE evidences in play. They should have limiited the amount of evidence that actually is in play. We find that most of the time the evidence cards stay in the same spot due to a tie which causes the evidence NOT to move. I think it would be more interesting to play the accusation card and no matter what you played your evidence went the way you played it. This could cause the game to be over on the first round - which is why the inspection cards with ALL THREE evidences being in play is dumb. The ONLY reason we still play this game is because we do what was recommended to us by Tom Vasel of Dice Tower fame - we role play the characters as we play it. We know that there is barely a game to this, and it will play out rather quickly, so we role play and get into character with the different roles. Each piece of evidence passed to us we improv in our different character voices, and try to dismiss the evidence as coincidence. When someone loses the game he/she then improvs the reason why he killed the old man and why he would have gotten away with it. Thats the only way to play the game.
