Usually the transmission distance should be over 30 feet. But in real world, wireless transmission performance can be largely affected by environmental factors. What diameter irrigation hose is needed?

Not really sure the exact diameter,but it was all readily available at the garden centre and DIY stores.

Interval several times a day and varying length of watering?

yes. Up to 100 water time slots per day can be configured. Watering length can be any number between 1 and 1439 minutes.

Will the link tap work with the gateway inside a steel garden shed and the wireless unit connected to a tap outside the shed??

If there is no window on the steel shed, I doubt the device will work. If there is a glass window, placing the gateway near the window may work. If you can get mobile carrier signal or home WiFi signal on your phone inside of the shed, then I think Linktap device will also work.
