Phenomenal Movie. But this isn't a Blu-ray
It says DVD. It also Blu Ray. But this is just a DVD. I took the risk despite my confusion and now I have my own copy of the film, which is no bad thing.I just really really want them to release this on Blu-Ray. So very very much.

A beautiful and thought-provoking film
This is a film of two halves - initially focussing on the main character's ambition to make a film about political activists based on the diaries of one of the activists. First of all you are drawn in to the fun world of the college students and their friends - life is good. But as the film unfolds contemporary politics play a big part and parallels between the political history that is the basis of of the plot, and what is happening to the main characters really comes into play. The ending becomes clearer and increasingly inevitable but to give it a Hollywood "everything turns out all right in the end" ending would have been to do the film a disservice. I would not hesitate to recommend this film - but have your hankies ready!!

India at its Very, Very Best.
Brilliant, wonderful, amazing. that's it One of the best films and the best Indian film ever. I need to watch it at least once a week, but the only fault being you can't get the wonderful soundtrack that goes with it out of your head, so you spend the rest of the week singing.. which can't be bad. Rang....extremely colourful
Rang De Basanti, a very colourful and rich story. Very well realised and edited. The script is very well written and takes us smoothly between different world without catapulting us in a outdated or boring flash back.Would definitely recommend it and also nominate it for best film!

The industry benchmark
This is the direction in which the Indian film industry should be going. I'm surprised that critics found something to complain about with this film. Aamir Khan proves once again, why he is often cited as the best actor in the Indian film industry. His co-stars give equally strong performances. The story flows very well between the present day events of Aamir and his friends and the time of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and other freedom fighters. The only problem with this film is that it only touched on the surface of India's problems (such as corruption in politics), and it could have dealt with the issues of modern day India, in alot more depth.Otherwise, this is the best film to come from Bollywood in a very long time.

Entertaining but flawed Bollywood Epic
"Rang de Basanti" (Paint it Yellow) is a sprawling film which consists of two stories,; one set in the 1920's during the struggle for Indian independence and the other set in modern day New Delhi. The first story, filmed in sepia, is about British repression following a series of terrorist attacks by Indian separatists and this tale of heroic "patriots" prepared to die for their country is held up in contrast to the carefree hedonistic lifestyle of the characters in the second story ,whose values are multi-cultural ,Western consumerist ones. Notions of patriotism and sacrifice for one's country are ridiculed by them. However this all changes following the accidental death of one of their friends in an army jet fighter. Embittered , their lives all begin to follow the same course as the freedom fighters in the first story. They suffer state repression in a similar way. "Rang de Basanti" clearly indicates that there is considerable resentment among young people in India at political corruption in general and cover-up's of MiG jet crashes in particular. The present Indian establishment is portrayed as being as distant and brutal as that of the British Raj. The solution that the film proposes is quite disturbing; the peaceful passive resistance of Gandhi is portrayed as futile while the concept of "propaganda of the deed" , so beloved of murderous terrorists everywhere ,is exalted. At times "Rang de Basanti" seems to be inciting armed revolution, but I failed to see why the well educated , well off "heroes" of the film , who presumably are intended to represent Indian youth in general , should wish to do so. They live in a democracy, their economy is expanding and prospects for growth are limitless. Their desire to emulate the Western consumerist lifestyle should gradually be achieved. Comparisons to theBritish colonial dictatorship with all of its exploitation and poverty appear spurious to me. All governments lie, deceive and engage in cover ups in some way or another; the Indian government is no different . "Rang de Basanti" is an entertaining film, the acting and cinematography are quite impressive (the Golden Temple scenes were beautiful) and there are some good songs also. However "Rang de Basanti" jumps about quite a bit from past to present and the atmosphere of the film and the characters personalities change so dramatically that the film ends up having a disjointed feel about it. "Rang de Basanti" is a good , but flawed film , which addresses serious issues and highlights some of the social and cultural tensions in 21st Century India.

One of, if not the best film ever made.
I first saw this film on the Indian Drama Channel here in Wales a couple of years ago and I downloaded it but have never been able to find a copy that didn't cost over £90.00. And today it is here on Amazon. I am so pleased so very very pleased. I will be buying the 2 disc version for I always find they are a little cut above the rest. And so to the film. It's not that easy to relate the story for it would give away to much of the plot. Lets say - A girl from England has spent ages following the story about a photograph that she inherited from her grandfather. It was taken when her grandfather was stationed out in India during the 1st WW. And upon reading the diary that accompanied the photograph she became totally wrapped in her quest to find out all she could about the Indian soldiers in the photo and the reason why and how they all came to a very sad end. To say more would spoil the story so I shall stop there. The action is amazing, the soundtrack I would play everyday if my husband would let me. The magazine she worked for was going to sponsor her on behalf of the Magazine for the film/story, which was how she was going to pay for her flight and lodgings whist she filmed the story. Unfortunately something more interesting to the public came up and she was told she couldn't go....It is then she takes it upon herself to go find someone to do the acting and the rest is "Rang de Basanti. She has a friend in India from her college days and so away she goes to try to discover what you are about to watch if you decide you love this incredible, funny, yet sad, mood changes and disappointments which occur throughout. You will not be disappointed I promise you.
