Short lived. I'm on my 3rd one. in 2 years. Start with "hot" electronics smell.
These do exactly what they advertise they'll do. They will isolate a short on one track segment and they do basic segment occupancy detection. However, in my experience, they have been very short lived. My layout is a DCS210+ powered by the Digitrax 8 amp stand alone power supply which is fused at 7.5 amps. I meter the traffic moving through my system and I've never seen it get over 4 amps.On 3 separate occasions here's what has happened: I either start to smell "hot" electronics, or I'm unable to change any switch values while in Ops mode on the DCS210+. Sometimes both. Once this happens, the unit will still function but you won't be able to reset your controller and the BXP88 will eventually smell like it "let the smoke out".The good news is that you can get these repaired by Digitrax for $20 plus one way shipping. However, I've had them returned still smelling like smoke. They still seem to work, so I guess its not a big deal but I prefer my electronics not to smell like smoke. Also, the folks at Digitrax see dumbfounded everytime I've sent one in for these reasons as if I'm the only person it's ever happened to.After all this, I'd still order another one as they provide a lot of protection to my engines. It's my hope that these units are getting smoked to protect my train electronics.Another curious phenomenon with these units is that on occasion they'll stop working and all of the lights will flash. The only solution is to rewrite the firmware to the device.
