Nuvo Iron SCGS13BLK 13" Self Closing Gate Spring, Black

I got one of the 13inch spring back push door closers. Came very quickly and well packed. All the screws and pin stops, with a little handle to set the spring. Very easy. Looks great, works like a champ. Even on large split rail gate. Liked it so much, I got another for a smaller gate in back. Very happy with this door closer. Both of them... PS. I couldn't find them in the box stores. Hard to find without Amazon. Thank you both.

I have a solid steel gate that is very heavy. Unfortunately when the pool guy goes through the gate he often leaves the it wide-open. I needed a mechanism to automatically close the gate. Because the gate is heavy I added a second spring when it wouldn’t close with one. The first spring took me longer to install but the second was completed in about 15 minutes since I knew what I was doing. I used a screw driver to rotate the knob to adjust the pin. Was not very difficult. I would highly recommend.

The product was fairly easy to install but the pins are aluminum. One broke when I was tightening the spring. Luckily there was an extra in the set. The pins should be steel just like the rest of it to make it more sturdy. Caution, do not over torque the spring. Remember that as the door opens, the spring tightens. You don't need much torque on the spring to have a lot of torque when it's open. I learned from my mistake and now it's fine.

It is the design of this gate spring that makes it stand out. Other springs just have the bottom nut squeezed into the spring (which can certainly come loose). This design has a rigid bottom with a pin sticking out to anchor it. Very sound construction. Other designs have you using a wrench to turn the top nut so that you can squeeze a metal spacer into the space between the nut and the face plate. In my hands this design was very difficult to install. This gate spring has a capstan drive in which a supplied lever turns the nut so that the pin that will hold it at the correct tension can be installed. In my hands this was super easy. Without question I would purchase this item again.

EXTREMELY poor instructions. I had an experienced handyman assist me, but the paper instructions Step 1.were so poor even he couldn't figure them out. So much for ten minute installation! Step 2.We pulled up instructions online for help only to find they repeated the paper ones! Step 3 was utube which was helpful in installing. It really is a great device and we love it. If I had installed it by myself using these instructions I would have totally messed it up. Thankfully, my friend had seen one that was already installed correctly and we used that as a guide.

These things are cheap garbage but worse than that they are dangerous. It comes with a rod for tensioning the spring by twisting it and a peg to hold it in place that you move as you twist the spring. The problem is that the design allows for the tensioning rod to slip out for any reason at all - including no reason. When this happens all the tension you’ve wrenched into the spring is released in what I can only describe as a terrifying metallic tornado. Unfortunately for me I was just about to grab the peg when the rod decided to slip out so the peg (which is about the width of a pencil eraser) ripped through the tip of my finger. It was close to the worst pain I’ve ever felt. As a bonus my 6 year old got to hear every swear word I know. If the dangerous design isn’t enough to scare you off, one of the pieces broke off while I was tensioning as well. I was able to cobble it back into working order but this thing is clearly cheaply made. DO NOT BUY

In my case, the gate which I installed this on didn't lend itself very well to this style of spring but I was able to add some blocks of 2x4 to key areas to get this installed nicely. Something to keep in mind with this product is that it is significantly impacted by the weather outside (which stands to be expected, it is a spring after all). I find that during the cooler days the spring is under more tension and on warmer days less tension. It still gets the job mostly done, however, I purchased this product for the peace-of-mind of "knowing the gate is closed" which isn't always the case due to the above so I'm left still needing to ensure the gate is closed when letting the dog into the back yard. Additionally, I believe the weather fluctuations are the cause of my only other concern which is that the tension retaining dowel (of which two are included) has popped out of the housing randomly at least one time so far and been lost on the ground somewhere. Al of that being said, I feel like my particular situation is about 60% solved, so I give this product 3/5 stars (60%).

Works really well on a a large 4'×8' heavy cedar fence panel gate. One full turn on the spring and the gate rockets closed. 1/4 turn was a lot gentler and successfully closes the gate every time. **hint*** Put a screw in front of the spring set pin to prevent it from falling out.

After some tweaks this product worked beautiful and keeps my backyard gate auto-closed which is required by code due to having a pool. It is not complicate to install but does require a bit of strength and I recommend using thick protective gloves and protective glasses. I had to turn it considerably so it was able to close my gate, then during testing opening and closing the gate the pin snapped and came flying toward my face twice, the holes are in my opinion too big for the pins provided so the can come out easily. I fixed it by making a dent in the body using a grinder (you could also use a small file) so the pin can go in the dent and then securing it with an extra screw, this ended working quite well, there is no way that pin is coming getting out of there now making this a lot safer to use... strongly recommend doing this to everyone...

Works as it should. My gate doesn’t stay open anymore, so I am pleased. The instructions could have been better, but once you have all the parts in front of you, it should make sense as to how it is installed and the how the spring tension is increased.

Wish I knew this existed two years ago. This is just what I needed for my wooden gate. Installation was a breeze as I am familiar with the tightening mechanism. I recommend watching a video on how to install it's very easy, and like some of the reviews recommend, wear eye protection if you're not familiar with installation. I like that you can adjust tightness to alter saying speed. I definitely recommend. Wish I saw this year's ago.
